Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
"Hello Genius: Manners" is a new series that promotes manners, speaking skills, first words, and animal recognition. In this offering, a young hippo and his mother are out for a romp. They crowd their way into the bus shelter and onto the bus. The expressions on the faces of the other animals and the way their bodies are contorted show that they are not comfortable. The phrase "Excuse Me" appears often as the hippos continue their jaunt. A pig, owl and a cat are knocked off the sidewalk as the hippos stroll down it. The duo arrives at an elevator and the animals make room for the hippos, but when a Little Chick tries to join them, they all exclaim "No Room! No Room!" It is Little Hippo who claims there is always room for one more as the chick perches on its head. While the book claims to teach manners and does include humor—it would be more polite for the hippos to wait outside the bus shelter, not crowd into an elevator and not walk two abreast taking over the sidewalk. It is a mixed message with a not so clear lesson regarding good manners. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

PreS—These board books have vibrant colors, simple repetitive texts, and concepts that young children will comprehend. In the first title, Little Bear asks for something (paper, a brush, etc.), Mama Bear gives it to him, and he thanks her. The ending is perfect with the cub creating a gift for her, using the art supplies she has provided. In the second title, Mom and Hippo are fitting themselves into crowded spaces, from a bus stop, to a bus, to an elevator. Each time, the other animals are obviously uncomfortable, but Hippo always politely says, "Excuse me!" These books are perfect for one-on-one sharing or reading to a small group.—Lora Van Marel, Orland Park Public Library, IL
