Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nicole Peterson Davis
Do you have a desire to dress as a hipster or have you been curious about what constitutes “hipster style?” If so, this is the book for you. Hipster Fashion contains everything you need to know to get started as a hipster. The book starts out with a quiz to see if you have an unusual sense of style. Then, it shows celebrities who have the hipster look and explains how each person makes a hipster fashion statement. Next, the book talks about what you can do to get the look. This includes photographs of different “hipster” clothing items, descriptions of influences on this trend throughout the years, and even examples of these influences. The book also gives readers tips on how to make their own hipster clothing, make accessories, apply make-up, and even dye their hair temporarily. Finally, the book gives the reader ideas on where to find hipster clothing and accessories, and some fashion tutorials. The end of the book contains a glossary, an index, and further information on this popular trend. Part of the “What’s Your Style?” series. Reviewer: Nicole Peterson Davis; Ages 8 to 12.
VOYA, February 2014 (Vol. 36, No. 6) - Debbie Kirchhoff
The books in this What’s Your Style? series are a fun mix of fashion and self-discovery, with a little DIY thrown in for good measure. The layout is magazine-like: slick and well designed, bright illustrations, numerous photos of clothing and celebrities, and even a multiple-choice quiz to help determine which style would best express the reader’s individuality. Each book provides examples of famous people who model that particular look and also offers choices of colors, patterns, and styles to make that look work for the not-yet-a-celebrity reader. Makeup tips, hairstyle examples, and advice on choosing accessories to represent each style are also included. Emphasis is placed on exploring options to find the best way to highlight the reader’s own personal style. Creativity is also encouraged through various projects to craft accessories, like scarves or headbands. There are also ideas for refashioning shoes and clothing for a new look. Finally, the author provides a playlist of songs and suggestions for movies and television shows to suit the newly discovered fashion vibe. (What’s Your Style?) Reviewer: Debbie Kirchhoff; Ages 11 to 15.
