Writing for managers in all industries, Sack, a labor lawyer, publisher, and author ( The Employee Rights Handbook: Answers to Legal Questions from Interview to Pink Slip , Facts on File, 1991; What's Love Got To Do With It , LJ 2/87), has created an outstanding, practical legal guide to help solve employee problems during various stages of hiring and firing, with preventive strategies. He addresses preemployment considerations; employee benefits; on-the-job policies, procedures, and problems; and termination decisions. A wide range of issues such as affirmative action, illegal hiring, drug, alcohol, and AIDS testing, and sexual harassment are thoroughly treated. Each subject features a legal opinion in the form of ``counsel comments.'' In addition to numerous ready-to-use checklists, contracts, releases, and a glossary of terms, this readable reference contains 26 appendixes of sample applications, agreements, etc. While differences in local law for all 50 states are not addressed as they are in W.E. Hartsfield and R.L. Brady's How To Hire and Fire Legally and Fairly (Business Legal Reports, 1987), the material is more complete and up-to-date. In fact, it provides a rare discussion of new, relevant legislation, including the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993. This single-volume work is a valuable addition to business collections and is highly recommended.-- Marilyn Rosenthal, Nassau Commu nity Coll. Lib., Garden City, N.Y.
