Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In this grim, sexy debut paranormal, shape-shifter Jaxon Castille plots to punish his former lover, Libby, for betraying their antiterrorist mission and causing his friend's death. But once he finds Libby, long-buried feelings prevent him from pulling the trigger, and when he learns that she has no memory of him at all and that his clan's enemies, the DaCostas, are plotting against them both, he's glad he held back. Though their passion is soon sizzling again, it takes Libby and Jaxon a long time to overcome their mutual bitterness and distrust, and combine their efforts to uncover and foil the DaCostas' plan. Stone keeps things moving quickly, but flat characters, gaping plot holes, and purple prose (“There was a river of hatred, mistrust, and pain between them”) will turn many readers off. (Apr.)

Great Action Book as Well as Romance!

I have to admit it, but I probably wouldn't have picked up this book because of the cover. I know, don't judge a book by it's cover, right? Other than the black panther, I may not have really given it a second look. It looked like a bodice ripper and although I don't mind reading one once in a long while, it's just not really my thing. However, after reading a review of this book, I became interested. Then I actually won the book! Luckily those things happened and I now admit I really enjoyed this book. I'm still no fan of the book's cover as Jaxon is darker and his tats are SO much more interesting. Okay, I'm done talking about the cover since it really doesn't do this book justice.

In this book Jaxon is alpha male all the way. He decides to give Libby a chance at explaining her treachery before he kills her and that is where the story really gets going. After finding out she was not the woman he expected to find, he sees a shell of a woman she used to be. It tugs at him and he has to protect her and now himself to find out what happened. The simple betrayal has now become a action filled mystery that he must solve to find the real truth of what happened. He finds out more than he bargained for and also finds that he has found his true mate. One who can awaken the love within the hard shell of man/beast. The ending in this book also sets things up for the next in the series. It's not a cliffhanger, but it really makes you want to see what is going to happen next.

Oh yea, there are a lot of hot lusty scenes in this book, but it doesn't take over. The action in this book is really what takes over and had me turning the pages to see what was going to happen. What I really loved about this book that even in Libby's weakened state, she finds that being a victim is a choice, and it is one that she no longer is willing to choose. She found her strength within herself before she even knew who she was! She was stripped of her dignity, health (both mental and physical), and memory and yet still found the strength to no longer be victimized! To me, that is a strong person.

Do I recommend this adult book? Yes I do. Despite the cover... ;) I give this book 4 stars.

    Suspenseful Paranormal Romance Debut

His Darkest Hunger is the exciting debut novel from Juliana Stone and the beginning of her Jaguar Warrior series. Jaxon is a jaguar-shifter and the leader of a governmental paranormal anti-terrorism unit (PATU) whose members also include a vampire, sorcerer and a human named Libby who is Jaxon's former lover. Three years earlier, the team is ambushed and a fellow teammate and shifter, Diego, is killed. The team then discovers that Libby has disappeared. They believe she has betrayed them by giving information of their location to an organized crime family of shifters. For the next three years, Jaxon is consumed with hatred for Libby and the need to find her and have his revenge.

Jaxon finally gets the opportunity to punish Libby when he is given intel on her whereabouts presumably from his supervisor and told to kill her. But his desire to know the truth keeps him from pulling the trigger. The Libby that he finds is but a shell of the woman he once knew. She is physically weak, emotionally fragile and has no memory beyond two months ago. As he is studying Libby, an attempt is made on his own life. Though his hatred for Libby remains, a seed of doubt has been planted in his mind. He takes her back to PATU headquarters in New York in hopes that her memory will return. Once her past becomes clear, Jaxon realizes that all is not as it seems.

His Darkest Hunger is a fast-paced, heart-wrenching story of love and betrayal. The author builds an exciting world full of Azetc myth and dark magic. Jaxon is the ultimate alpha male hero. At first it may appear that Libby is weak and needs to be saved, but we soon discover how strong and brave she is. Ultimately the two must put aside their animosity and learn to trust each other again to fight the dark forces bent on destoying them both. The story ends with a nice opening for the next book in the series, His Darkest Embrace. I'm looking forward to reading more!

I have read all the books in this series and the spin off. I think the concept is great, however I think there are big pieces of the story line missing. I was left with more unanswered questions. I would love to have had a story based on Toniella and Azaiel. I would have also liked to have know what happened to Declan and Julian the six months they were missing, what did they go through. Maybe down the road we will find out.

What I learned from this book....Jaguars are smexy . This is a straight forward PNR full of angsty, angsty and sexy, sexy. Jax (lead alpha male) and Libby (heroine) parted under an awful misunderstanding that left her in the hands of their enemy for 3 years. I don't think I would have forgiven him for his part in all this, but then there wouldn't be a story . Fast paced and worth the read. I am really looking forward to the next books. The author has been posting snippets of her current project and the dialogue has been fabulous!(less)

I won this book from a blog and loved it! It drew me in right away and I couldn't put it down.

After searching for his former lover for three years Jaxon, a jaguar shifter,  finally catches up with Libby, a human that use to be a team member. (The hero wanting deadly revenge on the heroine, how’s that for an opening heh?) He has the perfect shot to take her out but he decides to see her face-to-face before completing his revenge and killing her. But instead of the cold betrayer he was expecting he finds the broken shell of the women who was responsible for the death of his cousin. Libby remembers nothings, not even the dark & sexy Jaxon. But while Jaxon is contemplating what to do next an unknown sniper takes aim at him.
Jaxon and Libby, with the help of their former team members, must figure out who is gunning for them while trying to recover her memories and find out the truth of what happened on that dark day three years ago. During this adventure Jaxon has to fight with his feelings of love and hate. He is disgusted with himself that he can still lust after the treacherous Libby and Libby is confused by his hot & cold emotions but is equally drawn to him.
Finally Libby recovers her memories and her kick-ass attitude along the way and emotionally, the tables are dramatically turned. Can Jaxon cope with his past beliefs, can Libby forgive, and will she be able to find the one thing that is more important then anything else?

A great debut for Juliana Stone's Jaguar Warriors series, her characters will grab at you from the pages. Fantastic plot without an overabundance of world building, you learn just as much as you need to as the story moves along.
A very enjoyable paranormal romance to say the least. I am looking forward to Stone's second book in this series, His Darkest Embrace coming out this October. But I really can't wait for Declan's book, oh why must it be the fourth book Ms. Stone? That's so long to wait!

    enjoyable urban fantasy

He had impatiently waited three long years for the right moment to kill his former lover for betraying their antiterrorist team; her seditious actions led to the death of a team member. Now in Winterhaven, jaguar-shifter Jaxon Castille begins his assassination of his former human lover, Libby Jamieson.

Jaxon easily enters her abode and knows he could kill the human traitor before she would even know he is there. However, something does not feel right with what he observes of her; so he hesitates on pulling the trigger. Instead of the Libby he knew, he realizes she is a tortured shell who remembers nothing. Taken aback by her amnesia and his damn feelings Jaxon brings his former teammates together seeking the truth, but remains unaware that the deadly predatory DaCostas clan stalks each of them.

This is an enjoyable urban fantasy starring two lead characters whose acrimony and animosity towards one another seem greater than the love each tries to conceal from the other. The world of Stone is a foreboding grim realm that enables the audience to believe in shapeshifting clans. Although the exciting story line has some shaky moments, readers will appreciate this dark fast-paced tale of betrayal.
