Overview

His Favorite Wife is the heart-stopping, inspirational narrative of a courageous, fifteen-year-old girl who becomes the sixth wife in a polygamous marriage. Cascading with rich, well-developed characters, this true story will capture your soul and imagination as the author reveals how a group of kind-hearted, sincere people are led to embrace this controversial lifestyle in their pursuit of the highest degree of glory. Laced with surprising brush-strokes of humor, this heart-rending saga will take its readers on a journey that outsiders whisper of and shudder about. It answers the question that a polygamist's wife is asked countless times: How can you tolerate sharing your husband?

In North America today there are over thirty thousand polygamists. They lead secret lives in their attempt to hide from society and U.S. laws. Their women are taught that obedience, unquestioning acceptance of polygamy, and giving birth to huge families of children to follow in their parent's footsteps will assure them a celestial crown. Few search out truth for themselves, but trustingly follow their prophet. Susan's book deals with this head-in-the-sand ignorance. She too, was one of these women.

After having read Shattered Dreams, by Irene Spencer, I was thrilled to find this book by Susan Schmidt, wife #6 of 10 of Verlan LeBaron. What an amazing journey Susan brings us on into a secret world, which is unknown to most. Susan does so with honesty, humor, candor and integrity. This book is the perfect companion and compliment to Shattered Dreams, as it¿s a completely different perspective on the same story. I could not put the book down. Although, I knew the ending, I had to keep reading to see how Susan managed to escape. What a brave and inspiring soul she is. I will remember this book for years to come.

I have always been interested in the way polygamysts live their lives but could never really find a book that griped me just by reading the first page. I couldnt stop reading, it was very well written! I laughed, I cried I felt like I knew these characters so well. I didnt want it to end. Im now looking to read the Shattered Dreams book that was written by Susan's second sister-wife & I cant wait!

After reading 'Under the Banner of Heaven' and watching Big Love, I became interested in the subject of polygamy in America. I was shocked to learn of the way these groups live in modern America. Susan's book is a true story of her upbringing with polygamy and her years of living as a plural wife and the danger she and her family were in as their church divided and were at 'war'. But the book is so much more than that it is a woman sharing her life, the ups and downs and innermost feelings of her struggles with that life she was living. I really felt like I knew the characters in the book so well and I have not been able to stop thinking about them since I finished the book. It is a wonderful story of sadness, fear, love, hate, friendship, family, and bravery.

I was sucked in to this book very fast and felt like I was there. I really am so surprised that this can go on in America today, that there are women so brain washed and powerless to let this type lifestyle eat them whole.

I really enjoyed this book, it was a quick read. I wanted to become more educated about living a poligamy life because you need to why you don't agree with the life style or the church. She does a great job of showing us how it effected her and the life of her sister-wives and children.

Even though I've read stories about polygamy and seen it explored on television this book shows the reality of it. It's hard to believe that in the 21st century people still live this way and can justify keeping women and children in squalor while men persue more young women. This is a subject that deserves more national attention.

Wow! It only took me three days to finish the book and pass it along to my daughters then to my husband. We all loved it and wished for more. The characters are so much like my friends and neighbors but think and believe so differently that it was very interesting to understand how this family thought about different roles in a marriage/family/religion. It sure made me think about my faith, family and life(and appreciate my life). I think it is one of those books that I will read again to pick up the things I missed the first time, since I couldn't put it down until late into the night! My husband noticed different things than I did. It was fun to enjoy the same book.

This book penetrates more deeply into the mysteries of polygamy and family life than any previous autobiography. Susan Ray Schmidt will warm you with her personality as you are pulled deeply into a relationship as unusual as it is inspiring. This page turner bears the hallmarks of a true classic. Susan¿s pain will make you cry and your heart will break along with hers but rest assured, you will be laughing before you finish the chapter. This is a must read!

Susan Ray Schmidt's story captured my heart. It's a haunting autobiography of her experiences as child bride in Mexico, at age 15, married to Verlan LeBaron, brother of Ervil LeBaron. This book stirred emotions. I laughed. I cried. I experienced her saga. Susan did an amazing job telling her story and painting vivid pictures of the cult's life style. His Favorite Wife is one of the best books I've read in ages -- couldn't put it down. I'd recommended it to anyone as a must read.

A truly amazing story of heartache and triumph! Courageous and eloquent, Susan shares her life in, and escape from a destructive polygamous cult. A spiritually motivating account about the affairs of a young heart, coming of age, and tough choices. I laughed, cried, and was awestruck but most of all, inspired. The reader will be left wanting more...
