You Will Not Forget Donn Sweet

Friends from high school still talk about the zany antics of Donn Sweet, a bright guy with a wild sense of humor. After college, he was drafted and sent to Vietnam. Lt. Sweet had a sign over his tent that said, "Smile! That's an order!"

The letters he wrote home brim with his humor, but they also contain brutal details and an unswerving look at war.

This is a book about life and death in Vietnam, but it is also a book about all wars and the families they affect forever.

    His Name Was Donn

You don't have to be a member of the Vietnam generation to appreciate this book. You don't even have to be a student of history...but if you believe in hope in the face of adversity, or life in the face of death, this book will speak to you. Even if your life has not yet been touched by personal tragedy, you'll be moved by Donn's letters and by Sweet-Hurd's struggle to accept what is, as opposed to what was, or what could have been. There is a 'before' and 'after' demarcation of a cathartic event for all of us. If you look at your own life, you'll identify that one happening that changes you forever. Sweet-Hurd's juxtaposition of her brother's letters and her thoughts about those letters provide both a meaningful bridge between past and present and an emerging portrait of a young man mastering the art of multitasking in horrific circumstances. This book is a poignant read that manages to be both tragic and uplifting at the same time. At 236 pages, it is a touching and intimate portrait of life, death, and hope.

    His Name Was Donn

One reader has said that this book is 'a picture of hope and yearning despite horrific circumstances.' Others have commented on the young soldier's brilliant humor while serving valiantly in the hell of Vietnam in 1968. At the same time, the book provides the narrative of the young sister who, nearly forty years later, still grapples with the losses, and who wonders at the absurdity of Vietnam, McNamara, Iraq, Rumsfeld....'Apocalypse Now' meets 'The Year of Magical Thinking.'
