Alexis Baptiste’s engagement to a wealthy businessman is interrupted by the return of old flame Hunter Cassidy, unknowing father of her five-year-old son, Jonathan. Hunter is a former DEA agent just returned from several years undercover as an illicit gunrunner in Central America. He’s hotly pursued by renegade CIA agent Tom Davis, who wants to use Alexis and Jonathan as pawns in his vendetta. As Alexis and Hunter flee assassins, their old feelings rekindle and Jonathan becomes attached to his newfound father, but Alexis’s engagement and Hunter’s guilt over his past misdeeds make them reluctant to listen to their hearts. While Reus (Destined Mate) provides effective action sequences, the suspense element is generally shallow and predictable, and the complications of Hunter’s past are resolved far too easily. The central romance is convincing and passionate, however, and Jonathan’s charming affection for his reunited parents is delightful. Agent: Marsal Lyon Literary Agency. (Jan.)

Panama, Central America

Hunter Cassidy looked up at the triple-canopy jungle and wiped the sweat from his brow. The thick foliage completely blocked the sun, but the shade did nothing to guard against the humidity. His sweat-soaked fatigues stuck to his skin, and the incessant buzzing of the oversized mosquitoes almost drowned out everything else.

The crunching of boots over the earth alerted him he wasn't alone anymore. If these morons weren't careful, the jungle would devour and spit them out in seconds. Not that he'd lose any sleep. Traitorous bastards deserved whatever happened to them.

From his hiding position, he watched Tom Davis walk out into a clearing. The man looked to his left and signaled. Hunter followed his gaze. Davis's partner tried to keep cover behind a cluster of thick trees. And failed miserably.

Hunter stepped out of his veiled spot, mere feet from Davis. He took perverse pleasure when the other man's eyes widened at their close proximity.

"All right, you got me out here in this hole. Do you have it?" Davis adjusted his linen shirt to display his nine millimeter.

As if Hunter didn't expect him to be carrying. "Do you have what I want?"

"If you show me yours, I'll show you mine."

"You first." After everything Hunter had been through, he wasn't compromising. When Davis didn't move, Hunter gritted his teeth. "Tell your boy over there that his head is in the crosshairs of my sniper." There was no sniper, but his bluff worked.

Davis's dark eyes narrowed as he pulled out a thick manila envelope and tossed it over. Hunter opened it and riffled through the pages.

When he was sure he had the necessary paperwork, he pointed to an overgrown elephant ear leaf. If Hunter was lucky, Davis would get bit by one of the many venomous vipers native to the region. "The papers and records are under there."

Davis glanced around nervously, but took the few steps to the plant and lifted a plain brown box. "How do I know you haven't made copies?"

"You don't...just like I don't know if you'll renege on our deal. Looks like we'll have to trust each other." Of course he'd made copies. It was the first thing he'd done. Davis knew it, and he knew it. Hunter hoped the thought of being exposed was enough to keep the other man out of his life permanently.

Davis snorted and started to walk away, but Hunter wasn't through.

"If I see you again I'll expose what you are, then I'll kill you." He was tired of killing, tired of death and just plain tired of living like an animal. That didn't mean he wouldn't make an exception for the man in front of him.

Davis tripped on a thick tree root, but quickly adjusted himself.

Hunter waited until both men were out of sight before disappearing into the jungle. He strapped his rucksack over his back and started running. A quick check of his watch told him he had two hours to make it to his rendezvous point. If he didn't make it, the helicopter would leave him, and he'd be stuck in Central America for another couple of weeks. No way could he allow that to happen.

If he didn't make it to Alexis in time, he knew that, deal or not, they'd go after her as leverage against him.

A story filled with dark secrets, conspiracy, lost love, and second chances. The layers upon layers of secrets, betrayals, mistrust starts to unravel when, after six years in exile, Hunter is not only facing CIA agents gone bad and wanting him dead, but the love of his Life, Alexis. The deepness of dishonesty and treason was uncovered through the story, with hidden parties to the deception, that took me by surprise. The story has a bit darker side to it, with the murky waters of the different agencies, and how deep the deceit goes. Alexis and Hunter's love story is as well, shadowy, since Hunter left without warning six years ago, never knowing Alexis was pregnant, that he was the father. After some air is cleared, while in hiding to save their lives, Hunter's insecurities, feelings of unworthiness, is keeping them apart. I couldn't but admire Hunter's protective side, his willingness to sacrifice everything for Alexis and his son. When together, Hunter and Alexis were intense and sensual, taking my breath away. While a bit confusing in the beginning with all the possible conspiracy theories, the story came together fast, and was delightfully nail-biting suspense material, with comprehensive ending. Four spoons for His Secret Past.

I enjoyed this story. I liked that Alexis was sassy and smart, not the kind of girl that needed help constantly but yet she was first and foremost a mother and she took that very seriously. Hunter was a typical alpha male, but tried so hard to stay away from Alexis for her own safety, not wanting her mixed up in his world. The chemistry written between the characters was immediate and I enjoyed watching them struggle to keep their distance. I was pretty sure I knew the bad guys from the good guys, but the story really had you guessing right up till the end.

My review on this book will be quite simple. I really enjoyed this story. It was full of suspenseful thrill and romance. Alexis and Hunter were interesting characters with multidimensional personalities that kept the story interesting. They were both fiercely independent and strong but knew how to rely on each other when it counted. The climax of the story was unexpected with the revelation of the unknown "bad guy". You knew that he was lurking around filtering information back to Davis and I was pleasantly surprised to discovered that it was not who I thought it was originally. The story was compelling and believable and made for a very enjoyable read. Four shiny stars on this one Ms. Reus.

Review:His Secret Past by Katie Reus 4 STARS It was suspense, you were never quite sure who all you could trust in the story. Hunter Cassidy disappeared six years ago and left behind Alexis Baptiste pregnant. Hunter was a former DEA agent and thought his boss was on the take. CIA had shown him proof. The CIA wanted him to go undercover and get close to head of a drug cartel and get some papers in his files. His cover was a gun dealer. Hunter hated what he was doing but thought it was for CIA found out it was not sactioned at all. He got the files and they promised to leave him alone and Alexis too. Alexis has a five year old and plans to get married in a month. Today she is going for her final wedding dress fitting. When she sees her exboyfriend following her. Then someone breaks into her house to kill her. Hunter just plans to keep an eye on Alexis to make sure she is safe when he sees her son and realizes he is a father. Then Alexis sees him following her. Hunter heard her scream and kills the killer. Hunter won't let her call the police but she was able to call her fiance when he was hiding the body. Hunter is not sure now who to trust his old DEA boss he thought was crooked and the CIA blackmailed him to work as gun dealer and he ended up killing drug cartel leader and others to get the files out. His own history looks bad. He needs to keep Alexis and his son safe. Its action packed romance. There are some sex scenes. I would like to read more books from Katie. I was given this ebook to read in exchange of honest review from Netgalley. 01/02/2012 PUB Carina Press

His Secret Past is a fast paced, action-packed romantic suspense with a heartwarming story about second chances! I loved just about everything in this novel but especially the strong and compelling characters. The hero and heroine of the story have a past which always helps the relationship gain believability and the story flow in these shorter novels (about 175 pages). Hunter left Alexis six years ago to protect her from the dangers of his job as an undercover DEA agent when a few dirty CIA agents set him up. Now he’s back with evidence to clear his name, turn the traitors in and get on with his life; but in doing so he has put Alexis and the son he never knew about in even greater danger. To protect her and their son from assassins, they go on the run with the help of Alexis’ new fiancé. Hunter has never stopped loving Alexis and finds it hard to keep his hands off of her, though he knows that he’s no good for her and could never be the kind of father his son needs. With a tortured upbringing, Hunter has insecurities about his worth but he would lay down his life to protect his family. Alexis resents Hunter coming back into her life when she is finally moving on but can’t deny the feelings he still stirs in her, she knows that being in such close quarters with Hunter is a bad idea but to protect her son Alexis goes along with his plans. How can she marry another man though when every minute with Hunter brings forth a passion she has never experienced with anyone else? Danger and intrigue surround the threesome and lead readers on a thrilling journey as Hunter and Alexis have to figure out who they can trust with their lives, and that of their sons, when a betrayer could be anywhere, while also learning forgiveness and acceptance if they ever hope to find a future together. Full of suspense, surprising twists and sensual romance, His Secret Past has everything I love and have come to expect from author Katie Reus!
