A week had passed since my first, and only, run in with Jason Corinth. In fact, I had almost forgotten about it when the elevator beeped on floor eight again.
“Lila Murphy – just the woman I wanted to see,” he said as he stepped on and pressed the button for the fortieth floor.
Once again, I smoothed out my skirt. Immediately very aware of my appearance I worried that maybe he told everyone he hoped to see them again soon. Maybe that was just how he ended conversations. No matter what I did, I just could not seem to settle down.
“Are... you seem upset, is everything okay?”
A deep breath helped.
“No, no, I’m sorry Mr. Corinth, I just didn’t realize it was you. I mean, I didn’t realize you were you.” I shook my head. “What I mean is that I didn’t realize who you were.”
“Please, call me Jason. My dad is Mr. Corinth. He started this place, I just took it over.”
“Y-yes sir,” I stammered, “of course, Mr. Corinth.”
“Jason.” His voice was a bit harsh, but it was hedged with that infectious, unbelievable smile.
“Listen, I hope you don’t find this forward of me, but you look wonderful today. You did last week too. You’ve got a way of carrying yourself that I think,” he paused for a moment, and then lit a fire in my belly with his eyes – flashing, brilliant and green. “Well. I’m sorry. I’m speaking out of turn.”
“Mist- ah, Jason, you’re...”
“No I’m not,” he cut me off, “sorry, that is. I’m not sorry for what I said, and I saw how you were looking at me the other day in this very elevator. I know what you were thinking.”
I felt heat prickle the soft flesh of my neck and creep down my shirt. At the same time, I felt a little between my legs.
“I haven’t stopped thinking the same exact thing since last week. Six days now? I hope you don’t mind, but,” he reached out and pulled the emergency brake on the elevator. “I’ve made arrangements.”
