Description: This is a reference book on the histiocytic disorders, conditions not frequently encountered by most physicians and patients. It is written by some 50 international experts in all aspects of the field.
Purpose: The book is intended to be a useful source of information for all who care for patients with histiocytic disorders. One particular goal of the authors is to encourage the same comprehensive care of affected adults as has become the standard of care for children. It is clearly needed to provide an evidence-based approach to diagnosis and management of these uncommon disorders.
Audience: Clinicians, scientists, patients, and family members of patients will find this book valuable. Medical students, residents, and hematology/oncology specialists will welcome it as a handy tool for preparing case presentations and reviewing the disorders at the bedside.
Features: The book includes 21 chapters that cover immunology and genetics, pathogenesis, clinical features, frontline and salvage treatment, association with malignancy, and late effects of therapy. One interesting feature is the designation of chapters to describe hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (primary and secondary), non-Langerhans cell disease, and psychosocial implication of the disorders. The content is detailed, but topically organized to facilitate comprehension. Each chapter includes photographs, most of which are in black and white. The color plates in the chapters on diagnostic histopathology and non-Langerhans cell disease greatly enhance these sections. An alphabetized bibliography is also provided.
Assessment: This is the only current comprehensive text on histiocytic disorders. Although it will not be uniformly of interest for physicians and patients, it will be an essential addition to the libraries of those who are interested in these fascinating diseases.
