Description: Mastery of cell biology and histology is required for advanced training in the biomedical and life sciences. Purpose: According to the author, the aim of this product is to help students understand, and pinpoint weaknesses in their understanding of, the material that is most often covered on examinations. With this purpose in mind, the author has compiled open-ended questions and short answers that provide a self-directed means for rapid assimilation of key concepts, self-assessment, and board review. The author's goal is to help students excel on course examinations and the USMLE.
Audience: These cards are intended for students of medicine, dentistry, nursing, and all allied health professions (e.g., cytotechnology and laboratory science) with the assumption that they have taken, or are taking, a general course in histology and cell biology. The author is an expert medical educator.
Features: The flash cards are user-friendly and fun to read. The blue-and-white illustrations and line drawings are well done and educational. Tables help organize complex sets of information. The questions are much more than simple recall. These open-ended questions ask students to compare and contrast, explain, or describe. Examples include: "compare atrial and ventricular cardiac muscle" and "match the names of the parts of the uterus with the letters in the diagram." Once you begin to review these excellent questions and answers, you are hooked on learning.
Assessment: This is a great educational resource for students of medicine and the life sciences. The author combines traditional topics in histology with core concepts in cell biology and medical physiology (i.e., structure and function). The resource is well organized and well written. The flash card format will appeal to some students; other students will prefer a book. This is the body of information that students of microscopic anatomy need to know to understand the foundations of medicine and succeed on licensing examinations.
