Overview

Minnesota’s past is defined by its remarkable natural resources, and shaped by its native peoples and early settlers. From the fur trade and the establishment of Fort Snelling, to harnessing the power of the Mississippi River as a means to fuel emergent logging and milling industries, Minnesota’s history is that of a land like no other. Pioneering Minnesotans embraced everything that the sprawling prairies, rich farmlands, and more than 10,000 lakes offered. Boomtowns and small towns sprang up and were connected to the thriving metropolises of Minneapolis and St. Paul through a great labyrinth of railways. From the time photographers first started pointing their cameras in the direction of Minnesota’s land and people, crystallized moments from the state’s history were captured, and stories preserved. The archival images collected in Historic Photos of Minnesota offer unique insights into the state’s not-so-distant past. Spanning more than 100 years, this book documents everyday lives and significant events in Minnesota’s extraordinary history.

A few weeks ago, I was the grateful recipient of Historical Photos of Minnesota Yes, this is a food blog but nourishment comes from all over and as a non-TV watcher books sing to me. As a writer, books claim my heart. And as a playwright, historical photos evoke a time and place instantaneously.

The delight for me in the book is that so many photos can be searched for in the state and found. Minnesota has not erased all its history with "new." Minnesota's "Grand Get-together" (the State Fair), Duluth's aerial bridge, the lock and dams on the Mississippi River, Minnehaha Falls (immortalized by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1855), the State Capital, its rich array of colleges and universities, the beautiful lake destinations and so much more all remain. The captions are wonderfully concise, dated as accurately as possible and are set to show the evolution of Minnesota from a fur trade stop to the thriving state it is today. Historic Photos of Minnesota reminds me of the richness of its cities, towns, lakes, forests, rivers and valleys that lay just outside my door.

Susan Marks did an amazing job of compiling hundreds of historic photos that span more than 100 years of Minnesota's history. She breaks it down from before Minnesota actually had a name (1850) through to a more modern Minnesota (1969). It has always been obvious that the people here are very proud to be Minnesotans. After reading this book and seeing all of the glorious pictures in detail I can now see why. She does a wonderful job of capturing the heart of the Minnesotan and telling their story. I definitely have a better understanding of this beautiful state's past, present and hopefully extraordinary future.

A nice book, big and heavy, with sharp reproductions of photos that have been locked away for decades in libraries and historical society vaults. Here's Minnesota through the years -- the Winter Carnival, farmers on the plains, the Twin Cities as twin babies, with muddy streets.

In reading this volume I was amazed by the thoroughness and accuracy of the comments. One learns a great deal about the history of this great state and is further educated by the pictures. I don't know when photography first came on the scene, but I am sure that some of the earliest attempts are included in "Historic Photos of Minnesota." "Historic Photos of Minnesota" belongs in every Minnesota home and in every school in the state. The history of this state is beautifully and accurately depicted in both the pictures and words. Marks has done a magnificent job of rounding up the contents of this handsome book. I recommend "Historic Photos of Minnesota" to all Minnesotans and to others who have an interest in the formulative years of this great state.

A One Hundred Ninety Nine page photo book or a One Hundred Ninety Nine page trip through the history of Minnesota? Historic Photos of Minnesota is both. With its page dominating photos and quick engaging history facts, it would make a great coffee table book in any home! If you're looking for something to browse through over your morning coffee while learning a thing or two this is the book for you. Even if you don't drink coffee and have no interest in knowledge I'd still give it a shot, you might be surprised. Kudos to all involved in the making of this bit of history!
