Overview

More than 250 years passed from the founding of the first English colony in the New World at Jamestown in Virginia until the beginning of the American Civil War, and nearly a century and a half more has passed since the Civil War ended. As distant as such milestones of history may seem today, Virginians are fortunate to be able to see the physical evidence of great events, people, and places everywhere in the Old Dominion. Historic Photos of Virginia showcases many of the state’s important places as well as events both great and small, beginning with the Civil War and carrying forward to the momentous changes that took place during and after the Second World War. While historic sites such as Monticello, Hampton Institute, and Arlington National Cemetery are featured, so too are the everyday city streets and rural countryside where Virginians lived and worked. These black-and-white images tell the story of Virginia, its people and places, with a vividness only historic photographs can offer.

Editorial Reviews

Midwest Book Review
With the invention of photography, the visual recordings of the ordinary and the extraordinary become possible to a versatile and definitive degree never before attainable. The result is a visual legacy such as is embodied within the pages of Turner Publishing Company edition of "Historic Photos of Virginia". Ideal for browsing and enhanced with a concluding 'Notes on Photographs' section, "Historic Photos of Virginia" is an impressive body of work and a welcome addition to personal, academic, and community library Photography collections, as well as Virginian History and American History reference shelves.

This book isn't just for good ole' folks who love Virginia: The photos are great for any coffee table west or east of the Mason-Dixon Line. The stories and shards of history collected in this book are incredibly interesting and worth at least one read if not more. This book is a great tribute to the Commonwealth's rich past and is great for those new to Virginia and those who carry a torch for the state that's for lovers.

Historic Photos of Virginia, a book that I've been anxiously awaiting. Ever since I saw the title, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. When I finally did - I was not disappointed. This book should be on every one's Christmas list this year. Not only for Virginians, but anyone who enjoys American history. The photos are phenomenal. It's a great testimonial of Virginia's past, and it will be most interesting to see what photographs will be included in future pictorials of the Old Dominion.

"Historic Photos of Virginia" broadens the frame of reference to include every corner of the commonwealth - from modest frame houses in Virginia Beach to grand estates in Albemarle County. Some of the photos show the original context of buildings now surrounded by the rush of modern life, such as the haunting shot of Alexandria's Episcopal Seminary during the clear-cut sparse landscape of the Civil War. Others show long-gone buildings, demolished in urban-renewal efforts or to make way for larger roads across the commonwealth. Together they show the sweep of history and hint at a world that is in many ways passing from view.
