Overview

Historic Samplers presents thirty outstanding American samplers originally made in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, which are now prized antiques in museum and historical collections. Selecting the samplers for their historic interest as well as their exceptional beauty, author Patricia Ryan spent five years tracking them down and devising charts that allow them to be reproduced in modern materials. Included in the collection are a sampler stitched by Paul Revere's great-granddaughter, a miniature band sampler by Ethan Allen's cousin, one made by Revolutionary War heroine Polly Daggett, and a genealogical sampler stitched by three women of the Robert E. Lee family. For each of these museum-quality samplers, the book provides a brief biography of the child who stitched it, a chart with floss-color specifications, instructions for exact reproduction, and full-color photographs of the finished sampler, as well as comments on the unique aspects of its design. The authors have also supplied a how-to guide for all stitches used in the book, sample alphabets for marking and monogramming, and a selection of mottoes and verses from antique samplers. An illustrated introduction offers insight into the role samplers played in the lives of young girls and describes many of the technical characteristics common to the extraordinary works selected for this collection. Handcrafts and cross stitch are becoming ever more popular, and the value of antique samplers is rising rapidly. Historic Samplers promises to be unique in its field for both the insights it provides to collectors of antiques and folk art and the beauty of its needlework.
