Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4 UpRich, extremely informative histories. Colorado spans the years of gold discovery, Indian Wars, near occupation by Confederate troops, and the present population boom. Biographical sketches of colorful and influential Coloradians are included. Ohio begins with the ancient Mound Builders and moves on to chronicle relations with Native Americans. The growth of trade and manufacturing and the state's roles in the War of 1812 and the Civil War are also covered. Cleveland's Carl Stokes, the first African American mayor of a large U.S. city, and Ohio's most famous politician, former astronaut John Glenn, are highlighted. Native American origins and eventual settlement by Europeans and the Quaker Colony mark the beginning of Pennsylvania, which goes on to describe the First Continental Congress and the ratification of the United States Constitution. The Battle of Gettysburg and the famous address by President Lincoln, as well as modern-day Pennsylvania, are all covered. Each book has a useful "Gazetteer" of biographical and chronological information as well as the state flag, nickname, flower, and bird. Overall, these series entries present information in greater and more interesting detail than many comparable titles.Julie Halverstadt, Douglas Public Library District, Castle Rock, CO
