This superbly illustrated and fascinating history sheds new light on t he emergence of dermatology as a separate medical specialty and on som e of the key players who have contributed to its development. Ranging from the early Egyptian period to the present day, it offers a unique insight to dermatologists about their past and about the influences th at led to present practice. The volume features an exceptional range o f illustrations with historical plates such as 'Molluscum contagiosum' , from Thomas Bateman's Delineations of Cutaneous Diseases, 1817, an 1 869 painting of ichthyosis hystrix by Carl Heitzmann, and early experi ments in ultraviolet therapy by Finsen and colleagues in 1903. The wor k deserves a valued place on the bookshelves of all those with an inqu iring interest into the development of present-day dermatology. It inc ludes bibliographic references and an index.
