Overview

Each one of these two clean cowboy romance books is the first book in a series by bestselling authors Linda Bridey and Kate Whitsby.

Westward Winds (Montana Mail Order Brides: Book 1)

Tessa O’Connor lives in a world of privilege and excess. Her doting parents want her to make a good match with a worthy gentleman and live a respectable life. She is beautiful and intelligent and she comes with a hefty dowry. There is no reason that she shouldn’t be able to find an eligible man and settle down.
Tessa herself is the reason. The men who are attempting to court her are, in her opinion, boring and conceited. Not only that, Tessa craves excitement and adventure, of which there is little in her social circles. By chance, she comes across an advertisement for a bride brokerage company seeking eligible women of good breeding to go west and find husbands.
One man on the list catches her eye and she begins corresponding with him, eventually agreeing to go to Montana to meet him. She can’t resist the possibility of finding someone different and even if she doesn’t, the adventure itself would be worth her time. Tessa makes a successful escape and sets out to make a new life in Montana.
Dean Samuels is a Montana rancher who is in over his head. His ranch is struggling and his two children are unruly and in need of a caretaker. It’s clear to his younger brother, Marcus, that he needs help. He tells Dean about a mail order bride service and convinces him that he should utilize it to find a wife.
After his wife, Sarah, had passed away, Dean never intended to marry again. His ranch and his children became his life. However, it becomes apparent that Sadie, his daughter, and his son, Jack, need stability and love. The demands of raising his children and keeping his head above water financially have taken a toll and Dean grudgingly gives in to Marcus’ idea.
Sarah had been the love of his life and Dean doesn’t intend to let any other woman into his heart. He’s locked those kinds of emotions deep inside, not wanting to take the chance of getting hurt like that again. Because Dean has trouble expressing his feelings in writing, his younger brother Marcus agrees to help write the letters to Tessa. Dean is happy to leave that part up to him.
When Dean and Tessa meet, sparks fly between the two strong willed people. Tessa is disappointed that Dean isn’t the romantic, sophisticated man she was lead to believe he was in the letters she received. Dean is aggravated that she isn’t a meek woman who is easily managed. Never mind the fact that she has no idea of how to take care of children and keep a home.
Dean and Tessa struggle to find common ground and make their marriage work. Will they each take the risk and open their hearts to one another? Can their marriage survive and will they find love and contentment in each other? Their future happiness hangs in the balance under the Montana skies.

Since starting her writing career in earnest, Linda has written thirty-seven books and counting, which have gained great popularity. Readers are drawn to her vivid writing of mail-order bride and historical romance stories, many of which deal with social issues, and always include humor and heart. Her Westward series, which includes twenty-three books, is set in Dawson, Montana. When the series ended, her readers wanted more of the characters they’d come to know and love—so much so that it prompted her to create the Dawson Chronicles, which picks up the stories of many of the descendants of the original characters, but can also be read as a stand-alone series. Linda’s Echo Canyon series, tells the story of a small Montana town on the verge of extinction after the collapse of the mining industry in the region. It shows the ingenuity of the Echo’s inhabitants in how they come together to save the town they love. All is not always as it seems in Echo with mystery, suspense, and romance abound! When asked how she would classify her writing, she said, “My stories don’t include excessive swearing or explicit sexual situations. While I do express passion in my books, I don’t feel the need to provide a play-by-play of the physical side of relationships. Therefore, I only go so far and leave the rest up to the readers’ imaginations, focusing instead on the emotional aspect of my romances. I’ve had a lot of readers tell me that they feel my books are safe for their teenaged children or grandchildren to read, which makes me feel good.” Linda encourages readers to sign up for email alerts about her new releases at www.lindabridey.com and appreciates it when readers leave honest reviews on her books.

I enjoyed both authors double set books. They each had their way of bringing out the characters and the stories in a most entertaining way. I will definately be reading the sequels to each book.

Second story not so much

The first story is ok. However , the second is awful . It leaves you hanging, and the story itself jumps all over the place. It doesn't flow very smoothly .

The first story in the book, Westward Winds, is good. The plot is decently thought out, and the characters mostly developed, although I didn't get a great feel for the heroe's character, as we don't see him as much as the heroine. I wanted to give it four stars. The second story, Violet's Mail Order Husband, was worth maybe one star. I gave a three overall, because I didn't want to drag down the rating for the first story. The idea for the second story was an interesting switch, as the story involves mail order grooms. Too bad the plot wasn't developed by an author a bit more mature in their writing. Violet and her sisters are so insipid, I wanted to kick them. All they (and their grooms, who were supposed to be well seasoned cowboys) did was stand around and make calves eyes at each other. I actually thought the grooms innocence was refreshing, and much more true to the period than modern romance novels would have you believe. Still, the plot wasn't well thought out, and we never get an explanation for why Cornell was behaving the way he was. His behavior (and even Violet's) was inconsistent at best. There is some character development of Violet and her sisters, but little for the grooms, and not enough to make me care what happens to any of these people. I thought Iris might get a little interesting, but then she acted like a besotted fool the second her groom showed up and I lost interest. The worst part of the whole second story was that it is actually a teaser sample of what should be one novel, and instead has been split into three books. It is not a complete story at all, and I hate this trend in ebooks. If you aren't going to buy all three books, save yourself some grief and don't read this second story about Violet. Get this two book set for the first story, and read that one. Violet's story has not just a cliff hanger (they just found a dead body and the story ends right there!) but an incomplete plot. Frustrating, as I thought maybe now the story might get interesting enough to justify putting up with Violet and her sisters, and then it just ends.
