Overview

Contrary to the first edition, this work focuses on the events of this last momentous decade while the Cuban regime and its subjects struggle on bereft of outside support and subsidy. The author has amply covered this time period. Entries include all Spanish governors and captains general with an accompanying chronological listing of such office holders, special attention to transport and communications, and every present-day "municipo", along with Cuba's older administrative divisions. This updated, enlarged and largely rewritten edition should prove a wide-ranging aid in this fascinating history of what, for so many Americans, is still their nearest neighbor, and one that so closely, so often, became an integral part of American territory. The bulk of the information is found in the dictionary, which sits between an outline chronology and a concluding selective subject-arranged bibliography providing a wealth of information on Cuba's political, social, economic, industrial, technological, medical, military, cultural, literary, legal, and ecclesiastical development, from the earliest human settlement to the difficulties of the last decade. Also includes several maps detailing such aspects of Cuba as its provinces, major highways, natural features and railroads. Reviews from the Previous Edition: "The late A. Curtis Wilgus would have been proud of this work.... Authoritative.... Recommended for all undergraduate and public libraries...|s G.A. Rudolph" —CHOICE "...a valuable and useful new reference book.... easy to use.... should be purchased by all academic and large public libraries." —ARBA "Makes a valuable contribution to the reference literature of Cubanologysince it affords easy access to a wide range of basic information....A worthwhile tool.... The only source of its kind in English." —JOURNAL OF INTERAMERICAN STUDIES "Jaime Suchlicki...is eminently qualified to produce this reference work....Entries are informative, readable, and generally impartial....Particularly useful are the biographical entries for political leaders, painters, musicians, and writers....Reference librarians in academic and large public libraries who find insufficient the material on Cuba in general encyclopedias... will want to add Suchlicki's work to their collections." —REFERENCE BOOKS BULLETIN
