Overview

Italian history is complex and extensive and potentially overwhelming for the student or researcher. However, the "Historical Dictionary of Modern Italy" provides an ideal reference and springboard for research on Italian history, culture, or politics. The "Dictionary" presents the chief characteristics of Italy's political, social, and cultural changes since the Napoleonic era. Over 350 dictionary-style entries illustrate the rich complexity of Italy's evolution, especially in the twentieth century. Special attention is paid to the political figures, intellectual movements, and formative events. Students and professors of contemporary history, comparative politics, and international relations should find the dictionary-type entries especially useful for scrutinizing Italy's exceptional capacity for political innovation. Useful for first-time students of Italy looking for a familiarity with the country, but also as a quick and accurate ready-reference for the more experienced scholar. Also included are an introduction, tables, maps, chronologies, and thorough subject bibliographies.

Author Biography: Mark F. Gilbert has recently been appointed to the faculty at the University of Bath, England. He taught at Dickinson College's Center for European Studies in Bologna, Italy, for two years, and at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania for three years before returning to residence in Trento, Italy. The late K. Robert Nilsson was Professor Emeritus at Dickinson College where, between 1962 and 1990, he taught European Political Systems, International Relations, and the Politics of Modernization. Nilsson was the director of the college's study program in Bologna, Italy for atotal of ten years, and editor of the newsletter of the Conference Group on Italian Politics and Society for even longer.

Reference Reviews
This updated Historical Dictionary of Modern Italy will be an essential purchase for any library where modern Italy, especially its politics, is studied in any depth. Libraries requiring a more general reference to modern Italy that will appeal to a general enquirer or reader might also find this a useful acquisition....Libraries wanting a good source of reference information on the continent as a whole would do well to consider a standing order.
March 2008 American Reference Books Annual
the essential reference source for modern Italian history. This work is highly recommended.
