Reference Reviews
The present volume is to be congratulated for providing much background on this complicated period in Spain's history. The volume is completed by a comprehensive and up-to-date bibliography of puiblications in both English and Spanish. The volume will reward its users with an excellent introduction to Spain's transition from a semi-feudal society through the bitter struggles of the Civil War and the subsequent struggle to secure a place for Spain as a full member of the European Union and NATO. In short this is a worthy addition to this excellent series.

In this update to the 1996 edition, Smith (Anarchism, Revolution and Reaction) presents 700 of the figures, places, trade unions, political parties, broad influences, and language variations that have defined Spain since the Middle Ages. The book opens with a chronology dating to the 1469 marital union of Castile and Aragón crown heirs. A 33-page introduction offers a survey of Spain's major political periods and a brief summary of future expectations. Entries are organized alphabetically by their conventionally designated Castilian-Spanish or regionally indigenous name and run several paragraphs. A thematically organized bibliography closes the book.

A dictionary of Spanish history beginning with Napoleon's invasion in 1807 (and defeat in 1813) continuing through the Civil War (1936-1939) and Spain's entry into the European Union following Franco's death. Smith (modern Spanish history, U. of Southampton) compiles a brief reference to the period's economic, social and political history, focusing on leading figures, key political parties, institutions, and cultural life. The reference is most useful for information regarding the late 19th century through the Civil War, and considerably lacking in contemporary detail. Includes a detailed chronology, annotated bibliography, maps, and tables of economic and political trends. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
