In this update to the 1996 edition, Smith (Anarchism, Revolution and Reaction) presents 700 of the figures, places, trade unions, political parties, broad influences, and language variations that have defined Spain since the Middle Ages. The book opens with a chronology dating to the 1469 marital union of Castile and Aragón crown heirs. A 33-page introduction offers a survey of Spain's major political periods and a brief summary of future expectations. Entries are organized alphabetically by their conventionally designated Castilian-Spanish or regionally indigenous name and run several paragraphs. A thematically organized bibliography closes the book.
