This reference contains hundreds of detailed, alphabetically arranged entries on various aspects of the Old South, including prominent individuals, crucial events, and economic and social features. A sampling of topics includes the Louisiana Purchase, the cotton gin, Daniel Webster, and runaway slaves. Richter also presents an historical overview in the introduction, along with an extensive chronology. Supplemental materials found in the appendix include the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union (1781) and the 1860 U.S. Constitution. Independent scholar Richter, who holds a PhD from Louisiana State U., is also the author of Historical Dictionary of the Civil War and Reconstruction (Scarecrow, 2004).
