Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
With a collection of articles on topics important in the history of native North Americans, this book contains detailed maps and photographs. There are sidebars that explain the relevance of each concept or topic to curricula that may be used in middle school or high school studies. This is part of a series called "Curriculum Connections: Native North Americans" with six titles in total. This volume is arranged alphabetically, as an encyclopedia, rather than chronologically; a scheme that makes it difficult to find information about a specific period in history and an arrangement that is not particularly intuitive. While the information is useful, the alphabetical order may give the impression that each chapter describes discrete events unconnected to other events, thereby eliminating the vision of the "big picture" that history books usually convey. Teachers and librarians need to be aware that this book is not intended to capture the imagination or create a desire to know more about the subject, but rather to describe specific events and enhance understanding. There is a detailed index but if the entire series is organized into topics alphabetically, a note to that effect in the preface would have been a nice addition. Another unfortunate oversight is the lack of a pronunciation guide. Those drawbacks aside, this would be a nice companion series to other books about Native American history. Reviewer: Ellen Welty
