Editorial Reviews

Blend Radio and TV
Whether you are a drinker or not, this book will make you want to visit the bars listed in The History and Stories of the Best Bars of New York, just to soak up some history and atmosphere. Each bar is like a person, possessing it's own personality and quirks--and it is these trait that have contributed to each bar's success and longevity.

Author Jef Klein writes in a pleasing, easy-to-read style and the beautiful photos take you into the depths of each bar. The histories are fascinating--my favorite being the '21' Club. This account brings Prohibition alive and the ingenuity of the bar owners in their attempts to foil the mob, raids by the police and the Feds. New York's own personality as a city emerges as you read each of the bar descriptions and histories. Some of the bars a small hidden gems, and others are famous--known for celebrities that have continued to patronize them year after year. One thing the bars seem to have in common, is they are either family owned and operated, or they have staff that has been with them for years. They are steeped in history and stories that are memorable.

A trip to New York to sit and enjoy each of these establishments and take in the surroundings sounds like great fun. But, until you can make that trip, you can read The History and Stories of the Best Bars of New York, sit and reflect on each account--and of course, enjoy a drink or two. Another great historical account captured by words and photos, a Turner Publishing tradition.

Meet the Author

Jef Klein worked in the restaurant industry in New York City and New Jersey for 14 yearsas a bartender, waitress, and Union Vice President. Since 1988, she has been an editor and freelance writer, working for Princeton University, City Harvest, The Museum of Television and Radio, inMotion.org, and was a contributing writer and bar reviewer for Shecky’s Bar, Club, and Lounge Guide. Klein lives in Kendall Park, New Jersey, with her son Ellis, her daughter Simone, and her dog, Archie. Cary Hazlegrove: I moved to Nantucket in the spring of 1978 from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Nantucket has been my home and central to my work for more than thirty years.
Surrounded by endless beauty and unique seasonal rhythms, the Nantucket landscape inspires me. For over thirty years I have collected images and gathered observations about my layered island existence. The beaches, moors, ponds, people, weather, and the light are constantly at my side as I photograph every corner of my Nantucket life. This love of capturing Nantucket with a camera, has allowed me to assemble a library of Nantucket images that have found their way into eleven books, thirteen productions and numerous editorial pieces.
I photograph weddings and portraits as passionately as I do my landscapes. I have over thirty years experience, shooting intimate to large scale weddings, and small to extended family portraits. I enjoy being involved in a family milestone!
I live in the village of Siasconset, with my husband A.W. Bullington, a musician, composer, and my production collaborator (www.andybullington.com), and our daughter, Virginia.
My stock photography can be viewed and purchased at www.nantucketstock.com.
