Library Journal
Troy (history, McGill Univ.; Mr. and Mrs. President: From the Trumans to the Clintons) and Fred L. Israel (Winning the White House 2008: The Gallup Poll, Public Opinion, and the Presidency) gather here entries for each U.S. presidential election, written by 52 leading historians and organized chronologically across three volumes. Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. (The Imperial Presidency), also credited as an editor, is deceased but was formerly Special Assistant to President Kennedy and edited earlier editions of the set. Each entry contains an election overview, a short five- to 15-page essay on the election, an election chronology, and an electoral map and statistics. The overview provides a bulleted and organized list of facts, trivia, and statistics about the particular election and is an especially useful quick reference. The work concludes with an appendix outlining the cost of each presidential election in the currency of the time and in today's dollars, as well as an alphabetical index. In this new edition, each article has been updated, and new articles have been added for presidential elections from 2004 and 2008. The size of the set has been reduced from 11 volumes to three, mostly by the elimination of the historical documents contained in the previous set, which the editors note are freely available elsewhere. VERDICT This valuable and concise overview of all U.S. presidential elections is a worthwhile addition to major reference collections.—Samantha Schmehl Hines, Univ. of Montana Lib., Missoula

Gr 10 Up—Updating the 2002 work with coverage of the 2004 and 2008 elections, this title also features a format change: the primary-source documents that were included in earlier editions have been replaced with "Election Overview" sections that list important facts and statistical data about each election. They include, for example, candidates' names, campaign issues and events, and the trajectory and legacy of each race. Illustrations include black-and-white reproductions of period art, photos, and political cartoons as well as maps and charts that show popular and electoral votes. Most of the lengthy essays that describe and analyze the elections and that form the core of the books have been reprinted with only superficial stylistic changes and are almost identical to the versions first published in the 1971 edition and the 1986 supplemental volume. Authored by then-eminent historians and journalists, the essays were authoritative when they were first published, but most are now in their fourth decade and thus lack recent historical scholarship and contemporary historical thought, analysis, and writing style. Although these books have a new look and a new publisher imprint, most of their content is not new, making them less than useful choices.—Mary Mueller, formerly at Rolla Junior High School, MO
