This book is concise and yet all the movements are chronologically present and explained in the glossary. The most famous artists are listed with their famous paintings shown.

For the price, this book is a wonderful reference book. The classfication of the artists into genres is very subjective though. Many of the artists are found in groupings that may be incoincident with the bulk of their works or their public fame.

This is a compact version of Essential History of Art (about half the size). The print and pictures are smaller, but the book is portable if you want to bring it on trips.

For the money HISTORY OF ART can't be beat. It is a quick and easy reference for students or anyone interested in great works of art though out history. It highlights many artists, all by movement or period, with a brief interesting biograph for each.
