This is not your typical instructional survey textbook. Originally conceived by and created for the Bard Graduate Center, this multicultural work is a collaborative effort of academic and museum professionals and is a testament to the ideas, concepts, forms, techniques, and decorative arts and design creations of the various ever-changing regional and societal cultures in a global context. Spanning six centuries, the book is divided into four major sections (1400–1600, 1600–1750, 1750–1900, 1900–2000) and subdivided into chapters based on region (East Asia, India, the Islamic World including Northern Africa, Europe, and the Americas), each color-coded for ease of locating similar chapters throughout the work. Filled with an abundance of photographic illustrations and prime examples, the well-written, -organized, and -researched text is tightly woven yet flexible for independent and individual study—in fact it is conceived as a jumping-off point for additional and more personal research efforts of an individual. The concluding resources section includes maps, quotation resources, and suggested further reading. Kirkham and Weber are to be applauded for their refreshing and monumental efforts.
