Editorial Reviews

Booknews
From the first crude stone axe heads to the latest advances in communication technology, this new edition tells how each technological innovation met a critical need while creating the demand and the opportunity for the next breakthrough. Originally written by Williams (scientific writer and historian) and revised by Schaaf (U. of Salford), it explains and chronicles thousands of inventions and places them in their historical, cultural and scientific context in order to prove that technological innovation has not been the monopoly of any one culture but the product of the interplay of them all. New features include updated sections that cover computers and information technology; advancements in construction techniques for buildings, tunnels, and bridges; and genetic technology, such as genetically modified foods. Contains a biographical dictionary and many color illustrations. Oversize: 8.75x11.50<">. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
From The Critics
This is a fine one-volume chronological narrative of invention and technology. The authors organize the material in broad themes, including agriculture; buildings and architecture; transportation and communication; machinery, power, and mechanization; the technologies of war; and several others. The book is well illustrated in color with photos, explanatory diagrams, and maps. This revised edition of the original 1987 work is current through the World Wide Web and recent advances in biotechnology and nanotechnology. The material is presented in an objective and evenhanded style, properly in the context of the political, social, and economic conditions of each age. As might be expected, the explosion of technology in the 20th century means that some inventions are included at the expense of others. For example, the discussion of World War II-era inventions feature aeronautics, radar, rocketry, and atomic weapons, but not the simpler and transient (but, arguably, no less important) amphibious and Higgins beach landing craft that were instrumental to the D-Day invasion at Normandy. The bibliography includes 191 titles, but only 29 of them were published in the past 25 years, so these titles may be more accessible to a reader with a keen interest in the subject, rather than the general reader. The book also includes an adequate biographical dictionary. This durable volume is a good value for the general reader, a necessary addition to libraries in middle schools and higher, and a worthwhile resource for teachers at all levels. Highly Recommended, Grades 7-College, Teaching Professional. REVIEWER: John H. Morrill (American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy)
