Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Gary B Kaniuk, Psy.D.(Cermak Health Services)
Description: This is a volume of autobiographies of senior neuroscientists that "relate a lifetime of investigation and discovery."
Purpose: It consists of 16 chapters by senior neuroscientists who write about the experiences that shaped their lives; the teachers, colleagues, and students with whom they worked; and the scientific work that has absorbed them during their careers.
Audience: It is hoped that this collection "will inform and inspire students and working scientists alike in a wide variety of disciplines including biology, psychology, and medicine."
Features: The authors begin by presenting their CVs before briefly discussing their childhood and academic backgrounds. The major focus is on their professional careers and accomplishments, including their mentors and other factors that influenced their work. The chapters end with a selected bibliography. Most of the autobiographies are 50-60 pages long, so they go into considerable detail. Students and early career professionals will be inspired by these individuals who have accomplished so much. The book is not easy to read when the authors are discussing specific neuroscientific details. However, even without an extensive neuroscience background, readers will learn how these individuals worked toward success.
Assessment: The autobiographies of these 16 neuroscientists are quite extensive and they discuss their careers and factors that shaped their thinking in great detail. Readers will be inspired by these essays.
