    Better than Noel thinks!

I rate this work very highly. As my degree is in medeival history, specialising in Byzantium and the Crusades, I have had occasion to read this book a great deal and it is not only scholarly and complete, but also enjoyable to read - something I can't say of too many of the secondary sources! Just to set a previous reviewer (Noel Rodriguez) right, Sir Steven DOES know the difference between 'corn' and 'wheat'. What Noel is being confused by is that what Noel (an American I presume) calls 'corn' we in the UK (including Sir Steven) would call 'maize' or 'sweetcorn'. Trust me Noel, people in the old world have been harvesting 'corn' for 10,000 years!

    Great Sweep of History revealed

Highly readable classic on the Crusades. The major blemish of this scholastic work is that Runciman refers again and again to corn as the grain of the east. He doesn't know that corn was 'discovered' only after Europeans came to the Western Hemisphere. It did not exist anywhere in Europe, the Mid East of Asia. That he did not know that wheat was the grain predominant in the near east was annoying. The pacing of the major players was good. When he stays away from the food stuffs, he shines.
