Overview

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965) completed the original draft of his great history in 1939. His duties as First Lord of the Admiralty, Prime Minister and Minister of Defence were to postpone the final publication for some seventeen years. These four, fully indexed volumes comprise the only complete and unabridged edition of the masterwork of the man awarded the Noble Prize for Literature "for his mastery in historical and biographical presentations."

Volume One: The Birth of Britain

Traces the story of Britain from Roman times through the Tudors' ascension to the English throne in 1485, the eve of the discovery of the New World.

Volume Two: The New World

Two centuries of discovery, exploration, civil war, and massive changes in the English Monarchy, law and religion ending with the escape of James II in 1688.

Volume Three: The Age of the Revolution

A period of slightly more than 100 years saw three revolutions - each of which led to war between England and France. The volume ends with the treaties of 1815, which marked the end of Napoleon's Empire and the beginning of a European order that would last a hundred years.

Volume Four: The Great Democracies

The defeat of Napoleon left England uncontested master of a large portion of the world. The rise of the Empire is followed through the death of Queen Victoria and the end of the Boer War. America's Civil War and growth as a world power is also detailed.

Shame on me I didn't read the fine print when purchasing this book. I was hoping to get the complete, 4-volume set. Sadly, when I received it, I discovered that it was abridged. Wish I could get my money back.

Very abridged!!! Didn't see it listed this way, except I now can make it out on the picture of the cover of the book. Should have known with Christopher Lee also listed as an author. Don't make the same mistake that I did.

I also missed the"abridged" description of this book. It is more a list of historical dates than a historical story. I recall the four volume of books by the same title is a much more entertaining read. Save your money and don't buy this abridged version.

Don't buy this if you are looking for the four volume set.  Like the other two one-star reviewers, I missed the very fine print regarding the abridged edition.  I guess it is better than nothing.  But, no much.
