Overview

This comprehensive work provides a penetrating analysis of modern Middle Eastern history, from the Ottoman and Egyptian reforms, through the challenge of Western imperialism, to the Iranian Revolution and the Gulf War. After introducing the reader to the region's history from the origins of Islam in the seventh century, Cleveland focuses on the past two centuries of profound and often dramatic change. While built around a framework of political history, the book also carefully integrates social, cultural, and economic developments into a single, carefully crafted account. The revised and updated second edition of this benchmark text includes information on the Middle East since the close of the Cold War, and a new section on civil society and Islamic politics in the 1990s.

This comprehensive work provides an analysis of the last two centuries of Middle Eastern history, from the rise of the Safavids and Ottomans to the recent Gulf War. Explains the deep historical currents flowing beneath today's headlines--essential reading for anyone seeking a better understanding of today's turbulent world. Photos. Maps.

    Slanted

Cleveland's writing is very inconsistent from chapter to chapter. Most subjects are handled with little emotion and opinion, but the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is littered with little side comments that are way to biased, and in most cases, not factual. THis claims to be a textbook, but is far from objective. I read it with the same grain of salt that I would take to something as awful as an essay about how the Holocaust never happened-which this book is not far from including in parts, and certainly hints at on page 339.
