Meet the Author

Ralph Penny is Professor of Romance Philology at Queen Mary, University of London. He has published several books in Spanish and Variation and Change in Spanish (Cambridge, 2000). He has also published in a number of journals including Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, Romance Philology, and Modern Language Review.

    Spanish language majors take note

    This book is totally engaging for any authority of the Spanish language. It traces historically many reasons for the development of Spanish. It is the romance language closest to Latin grammar that there is; the reasons are all in the book.
    I learned things I never learned as a Spanish literature major in college.
