Did I learn anything in History? I passed through the 70's and 80's learning nothing about history in school. It was so dry and boring that I must have slept through class and/or didn't read my textbooks. I didn't want my children to have that experience. Our family has thoroughly enjoyed Joy Hakims wonderful series. My daughters, 8 and 10, were reading, discussing, questioning, and actually "getting it" without a struggle for interest. These books will definitely keep the reader looking forward to finding out what will come next. I highly, highly recommend these books for anyone interested in enriching their study of history. All ages actually - but what a blessing for the younger audience! The chapters are short, interesting and very informative WITHOUT the dryness of a traditional text book. Joy Hakim keeps the reader engaged and offers additional resources throughout for those wishing to dig a little deeper. FANTASTIC BOOKS!

I homeschool my children and use this series with my 12 year old son. He loves it and is always eager to read the next chapter. At the dinner table, he enjoys telling his Dad one or two things he learned that day. I find the information balanced and love the side notes.

In my class, we use A History of Us as our Social Studies textbooks. I have to say, they are the first textbooks I have really enjoyed reading. I honestly get excited when my Social Studies teacher gives us an assignment to read from these books. I am considering buying this set of books for home just for myself, because they are so cool.

I have been helping my children with their social studies homework, and after they're done and gone to bed, I find myself up late at night reading more. My kids love the books and enjoy telling me interesting anecdotes from the book. My children enjoy reading these books. These books are so good, I'm ordering the full set for home use.

I tutor sixth graders at a middle school and lately they have been working with the History of US series in preparation for seventh grade. I was a little disturbed when I read the section on Civil Rights. Hakim's name calling and sarcasm have no place in a textbooks for kids who don't have the tools to analyse a text critically yet. I think this title would best be suited for older students who are starting to learn how to question the authority of the texts assigned to them.
