    THE reference on Valentines

    Wonderful in-depth description of the history of Valentine cards. However, the book's photos are very dark. In many cases you can barely see them. My strong suggestion- find another edition of this classic, but even then reproductions are in black and white. Another comment, Lee thinks any cards older than 1890 are unimportant. Though Lee's book was published in 1952 she includes only three paragraphs on post-1900 Valentines! Even so, this edition is good enough as an introduction. Be sure to read the section on "comic" cards, also called "vinegars". When you read them you will realize why. (Some statess banned sending them through the mail!)
