History Past & Present: A Journey with Teacher Ras Sam Brown:

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Chris Slawecki
Teacher Sam Ras Brown is a noted rasta spiritualist who once ran for the position of Prime Minister of Jamaica, and who presents on History Past and Present nothing less than a spoken history of the entire earth in twenty-two chapters tracks with reggae instrumental accompaniment. Some of History Past and Present seems a little forced, mainly because, as you can imagine, it's a little tough to deliver a what amounts to a sixty minute lecture that covers Creation to Armageddon that rhymes, while remaining both lyrically and musically in the pocket. Nevertheless, some of this History is a reasonably cool lesson. Brown does not sing, but recites the lyrics like a sing-song ...

Brown does not sing, but recites the lyrics like a sing-song dubmaster. The music, mainly played by Dwight Pinkney and Carl Ayton, is usually pretty good: "Holyland Dub" thumps and skanks with a strong reggae pulse, then dovetails into the nearly new-jack drumbeat and bass of the funky "Surely Dub"; "Victory" is just as strong, and the "For You Dub" is downright catchy, modern reggae dusted with just the right world-pop shadings. It's also a pretty safe bet that there aren't a lot of other reggae dubfests out there that address the independence of the Caribbean states, the Boston Tea Party and the American Revolution, World War I, Mussolini, "The under belly of the Beast," the U.N. and The Vatican, and hope for redemption.
