Overview

The life cycle of a product consists of all the stages from raw material extraction, through production and use, to waste management. LCA assesses the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle. The environmental performance of products has made LCA a central concept for both environmental management in industry and environmental policy-making in government.

The Hitch Hiker's Guide to LCA is a textbook for those who want to learn the practice of LCA: environmental engineers, environmental managers, ecodesigners, product developers, marketers, production and waste management professionals. Applications in these diverse disciplines require different methodologies and alternatives. This book provides a step-by-step examination of how LCA works.

Two introductory chapters give a general overview of the LCA concept and its historical development. The next six chapters detail LCA methodology, followed by five chapters on LCA applications. Ten complete exercise projects are included. The aim of this book is to teach the execution of LCA as well as interpretation of methodology and results.
