Overview

Following the surrender of Germany ending World War 1, the country lay in ruin. Germans looked for a new leader to lead them out of their defeat. They found Adolf Hitler. Hitler became the leader of the Nazi Party. The Nazi plan for an Aryan nation provoked World War II in 1939. During Hitler's reign, he ordered those who opposed him to be executed and set up concentration camps where mass murders took place. This was the beginning of the Holocaust in which 6 million Jews and 5 million other innocent people were murdered. Hitler's forces conquered most of Europe before they were defeated in 1945.

Linda Jacobs Altman, author of Hitler's Rise to Power and the Holocaust, looks at the events that lead to Hitler becoming the ruler of Germany and the leader of a nation that murdered millions during the Holocaust.

Explores events in Germany that led up to World War II including Hitler's rise to power and the creation of the Third Reich.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
With the caveat that "knowledge is the best defense against the hatred that produced the Nazi racial state and caused the death of innocent millions," this text focuses on explicating the events which facilitated Hitler's rise to power in Germany. The text begins with the end of World War I and its affect on Germany, and continues through the beginnings World War II. Part of a series, "The Holocaust in History," the lucid prose in this slim volume is neither condescending nor oversimplified. For a more in-depth analysis of Hitler, James Cross Giblin's biography The Life and Death of Adolf Hitler (Clarion, 2002) would be a good recommendation, but this book serves as a good, factual introduction. Plentiful photographs are included, as are a timeline, extensive chapter notes, glossary, bibliography and Internet addresses and an index, making this a useful resource for reports. 2003, Enslow Publishers,
