Overview

If Hits seems a little inadequate, even though it weighs in at 16 tracks, that's because Phil Collins had such a long, productive run. Also, to casual listeners (and possibly even some fans), it's hard to tell which singles are by Genesis and which ones are solo cuts. So, it's almost a certainty that listeners will find something missing from this disc -- and not just because Genesis cuts are absent, but because there's not enough space to fit all of Collins' solo hits, especially since the compilers decided to include a couple of lesser, latter-day hits at the expense of some earlier, bigger ones, while adding his non-LP cover of Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" to entice hardcore fans. Thus, there are only 13 hits, which means some other big hits and good songs are absent -- "I Missed Again," "I Don't Care Anymore," "Don't Lose My Number," "Do You Remember?" are all MIA. A few of these omissions are quite regrettable, but in the end, Hits is nevertheless a representative and pretty entertaining collection. The sequencing is not chronological, so it doesn't develop a nice flow (although "Take Me Home" is admittedly the ideal closer), but the chief strength of this collection is that it puts all of the big hits - including "Easy Lover," "Against All Odds," "In the Air Tonight," "Sussudio," "One More Night" and "Separate Lives" -- in one place. No, it's not perfect -- and it's hard not to wish that it was -- but Hits still contains the majority of Collins' solo smashes, and that alone makes it a nice addition to his catalog.

Just kidding. I obviously like him 'cause he has unique styles. There are a number of songs on here that are the bomb, including 'Easy Lover' (with Earth, Wind & Fire's Philip Bailey), 'Another Day In Paradise,' and 'In The Air Tonight.' But 'Don't Lose My Number' wasn't included on here! Another downfall: the unexciting 'Dance Into The Light,' taken from the rather unsuccessful 1996 album of the same name. Bottom line: Phil Collins lovers won't care.

Phil Collins is my favorite artist, and I usually have to buy his Hits about once every couple of years, because I play it so much. This is one of my favorite CD's, because who wouldn't love a mix of the greatest?

Phil is more of a hits producer than an album maker and this CD is very good at collecting his greatest hits. There are enough near-hits that this could have been expanded to a double CD but this will suit its purpose fine until a larger collection is made.

I had not listened to Phil Collins for some time and a friend recommended this album. It is extremely upbeat, yet very soothing and romantic. (Just like the fella that recommended it to me!!)

If you are a Phil Collins fan, I highly recommend this album. It is the greatest album I ever owned! It has all the songs I love...didn't need to skip any songs. I play this album over and over again - just love it!!! So glad I brought this.

This compilation goes some way to highlight the extraordinary success and talent this guy has. Easy accessable tunes about love, pain and society. Top of the pile is the opener Another Day In Paradise, beautiful melody, thoughtful lyrics and that recognisable voice. Other notable pluses are the funky Sussudio while Dance Into The Light isn't really that bad at all. It's true Phil Collins albums don't fly off shelves the way they once did but this collection is a snapshot of a period where they did just that. Recommended.

this cd is one of the best I have ever heard by Phil. I have everything he has come out with and this with out a doubt this is clearly one of his best.

I initially reviewed this on July 5, 2008. I purchased this cd when I visited Singapore a few years ago and I am happy that I bought this cd. This was the first of the cds that I had owned by Phil Collins and I believe that it was worh the money I spent. Why the 4 stars instead of the five? Currently I am 27 years old and I am happy to know that there are songs on this cd that I remember hearing on the radio and had first heard when I was growing up. I was delighted to hear "two hearts" a beautiful and upbeat song that I first heard when I was around 8 years old and "you can't hurry love". I also love "groovy kind of love", "one more night", "dance into the light" and "against all odds". There are other good songs on this cd but the ones I just mentioned happen to be some of my favorites. The only con was that I eventually had to buy a genesis greatest hits compilation to get some of the other great phil collin's songs(which I finally did last year and will review later). However if you are willing to look past this collection missing some of his other great songs you will honestly enjoy this cd. I know that I said it before but this cd is so good that I still play it even though its been a few years since I first bought it (I am 27 now and I remember first buying the cd when I was around 21-22 years of age). I also agree with the one reviewer that had stated that this “Hits” by Phil Collins cd is a good first place to start if this would be your first time owning a Phil Collins greatest hits collection.
