School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 9 UpOffering itself as a "reference guide for teens and young adults," this title succeeds in its mission to dispel myths and to communicate, honestly and intensely, the truth about the HIV virus. Unlike most topical overviews, the depth of information and attention to detail make this book unique among the growing numbers of volumes devoted to AIDS education. Packer provides a thorough, concise examination of the biology of the HIV virus and its effects on the immune system. Difficult scientific concepts are mitigated by clear and unbiasedif uninspiredlanguage and diagrams. The book gives a brief, yet comprehensive look at the progression of the virus, treatments, side effects, and sociopolitical ramifications. Appendixes offer Web sites and national hotline information. To his credit, the author does not stop with a simplistic exhortation to practice abstinence or safe sex, but offers, in accessible language, protection and prevention strategies including refusal skills, alternatives to sexual activity, specifics on how to use condoms, and even tips on how to clean and disinfect needles. Emphasis is placed on the importance of decision making and self-respect. Although stylistically unremarkablethe tone is neutral; italicized "vocabulary" words seem randomly chosen, occurring in places with distracting frequency; and the division of material is occasionally choppyfor all this, the book is uncompromising in its delivery of the facts. Readers will find vital information appropriate both for reports and personal elucidation.Jennifer A. Fakolt, Carson City Public Library, NV
