Great book by terrific author Mark Walden!
The story H.I.V.E. (Higher Institute for Villainous Education) takes place in a school in a volcano in the early 2000s. This story is by Mark Walden. In the beginning of the book a boy named Otto Malpense finds himself in a helicopter in the middle of an ocean. He has clearly been captured. There is a tall Asian boy named Wing Fanchu sitting next to him, and the two become fast friends. Wing and Otto are taken to a school for villains (H.I.V.E.) which is in the middle of a volcano. The school is run by a mysterious man named Dr. Nero, and his assistant is a deadly assassin called Raven. The boys meet other first-time students including Laura, Shelby, and Nigel. On their first day the students have unique lessons like Beginner's Evil, Tactical Education, Stealth and Evasion, and Practical Technology. After two months, they are still in the school, but Otto, Wing, Laura, and Shelby devise a clever plan to escape from the evil school. However, the four friends are caught at the last minute by Nero and Raven. Meanwhile that same night, Nigel, who is experimenting with plants, accidentally creates an enormous live monster flower. The evil creature rampages around the school. Otto finds a way to defeat this huge flower and crushes it under tons and tons of rock. Finally, Wing's mother is dead, but he has half of her amulet, and he notices that Dr. Nero has the other half! He decides to find out how Nero got it and stays at the school, and Otto stays with him.
The author's words in this book are very descriptive and paint pictures in the reader's mind. Also, the name H.I.V.E. is very foreshadowing, as the school is like a hive-or a prison. The book is very adventurous and the characters are creative. A negative fact of this book is that it was almost too mysterious-especially at the end. A few of the characters were unlikable, like the evil mind reading Contessa, and the obnoxious, whining, Franz Argentblum. There are also some difficult words in this book that I had to look up in the dictionary. Some of these words were monoliths and concentric.
The writing style of the author Mark Walden is very good. He used third person point of view in H.I.V.E. Walden also used a lot of figurative language in this book. The words were extremely descriptive. Some great words in this book were indicative, rebelliousness, monoliths, and concentric. Walden's writing style is also very easy to understand, save for a few words here and there.
I would recommend this book because it is descriptive, it is action-paced, and it is adventurous. It is also good because most of the characters are interesting and creative. A novel similar to this one is H.I.V.E. The Overlord Protocol (book two in the series). The London Eye Mystery is great too. Another good one is Scat. I have read a book by the same man who wrote Scat, Carl Hiaasen. This book by Hiaasen is Hoot. The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan is a very exciting book, the first in a series of five. I think many people would enjoy award winning The Mysterious Benedict Society by the terrific author Trenton Lee Stewart. These are all great books!
