Overview

HIGHER INSTITUTE OF VILLAINOUS EDUCATION

Otto Malpense may only be thirteen years old, but so far he has managed to run the orphanage where he lives, and he has come up with a plan clever enough to trick the most powerful man in the country. He is the perfect candidate to become the world's next supervillain.

That is why he ends up at H.I.V.E., handpicked to become a member of the incoming class. The students have been kidnapped and brought to a secluded island inside a seemingly active volcano, where the school has resided for decades. All the kids are elite; they are the most athletic, the most technically advanced, and the smartest in the country. Inside the cavernous marble rooms, floodlit hangars, and steel doors, the students are enrolled in Villainy Studies and Stealth and Evasion 101. But what Otto soon comes to realize is that this is a six-year program, and leaving is not an option.

With the help of his new friends: an athletic martial-arts expert; a world-famous, beautiful diamond thief; and a spunky computer genius — the only other people who seem to want to leave — can Otto achieve what has never been done before and break out of H.I.V.E.?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Mischievously talented teenagers star in Walden's debut novel, which envisions the educational training of future megalomaniacs and criminal masterminds. Otto Malpense, a 13-year-old orphan, awakens aboard a helicopter with no memory of how he got there. He soon discovers that he and a few hundred other teens have been abducted by the Higher Institute of Villainous Education, a secret school committed to nurturing youth with "a special talent for the supremely villainous." Dr. Nero, the institute's founder, introduces the new students to the institute, located in a sprawling underground complex on a volcanic island. Otto, who has a photogenic memory, quickly befriends Wing Fanchu, a martial arts expert; Laura Brand, an expert with electronics); and Shelby Trinity, a dextrous jewel thief. The foursome conspire to escape their captors, and engineer a plan to return to their old lives. The multicultural array of staff and students Walden has created exude a cartoonish brand of over-the-top villainy reminiscent of Austin Powers or James Bond. Despite the villains' lack of bite (save for the giant man-eating plant) Walden's characters are memorable, if a bit cliched in execution. Otto and the others ultimately decide to stay at the institute; readers may well anticipate getting answers to several threads left open for subsequent installments. Ages 10-14. (May)

VOYA
James Bond meets Harry Potter in this auspicious debut. Thirteen-year-old Otto, a boy genius, is kidnapped from the orphanage that he has molded into his own small kingdom. Otto is brought to H.I.V.E. to learn the secrets of global domination in a six-year program. Leaving H.I.V.E., however, is not an option for Otto or any of his classmates. Undaunted by the challenge, Otto and his new friends Wing, Laura, and Shelby attempt an audacious escape, but they find that H.I.V.E.'s headmaster is one step ahead of them. In the end, Otto saves H.I.V.E. from an experiment run amok and passes up one final chance to escape, instead opting to stay and help Wing. This novel leaves many mysteries unanswered and begs for a sequel. Why is the headmaster wearing the other half of Wing's mother's amulet? Why is Number One, the commander of the Global League of Villainous Enterprises (G.L.O.V.E.), sponsoring Otto? Although the author's writing is not always polished, the subject matter is just pure fun. Otto attends classes such as Villainy Studies and Stealth and Evasion, taught by an assortment of nefarious characters. Also the story of Otto's life before H.I.V.E. is one of the most interesting parts of the book. A few British references by the author might puzzle some readers, but it is a minor distraction. Fans of the Alex Rider Adventures plus Harry Potter fans looking for something familiar yet just a little different will love this book.
KLIATT
Otto Malpense is none too pleased when he awakes to find himself being transported to an unknown destination. The 13-year-old orphan has just pulled off a remarkable stunt involving the prime minister of England, and he has scarcely had time to savor his success when the lights go out. He and a travelling companion, Wing Fanchu, soon learn that they are among those selected to enroll in the incoming class at H.I.V.E., a training ground for future evil geniuses and masterminds. Run by the enigmatic Dr. Nero and his staff, the goal of H.I.V.E. is to help students develop their "innate wickedness" and become the "leaders of tomorrow." While most of the students are either "legacies," the children of alumni or else otherwise incorrigible cases brought to the Institute's attention by desperate parents, others, such as Otto, are involuntarily recruited when their misdeeds are reported in the media. Otto soon makes friends with a group of new students, all unhappy at the school and all willing to participate in a daring escape attempt. A crisis involving an out-of-control botany project overrides their plans, however, and the group remains at the school for another term and, presumably, more books in the series. The book raises a thorny issue in that the setting is a training school for villains juxtaposed against a likable cast of characters, including Dr. Nero and some of the other staff. These are not two-dimensional cartoon characters; rather, they are more complex and contradictory to the common perception of evil. These characters display loyalty, courage, resourcefulness and selflessness, all heroic qualities that are valued. Even Dr. Nero and the mysterious assassin Raven risk theirlives to protect the students. Will YAs think or care about the conundrum raised by villainous but likable characters? Probably not, especially since the book focuses on the students who don't want to be there; the moral question gets quickly pushed to the background by the plot-driven narrative. Gr 5-8
H.I.V.E. is operated on a volcanic island in a distant ocean by G.L.O.V.E., a shadowy organization of worldwide wickedness. And, as 13-year-old master of mischief Otto Malpense soon discovers, here the slickest of young tricksters, thieves, and hackers have been brought against their will to be trained as the next generation of supervillains. Otto and his friends refuse to be held prisoner at the institution and develop a scheme to escape from the island, but they must defeat the all-seeing computer system, a seemingly undefeatable assassin in black, and a giant carnivorous plant to succeed. Warner's first novel is a real page-turner; those who love superhero stories will eat it up and not want to put it down. Sequels are virtually guaranteed.

Kirkus Reviews
How do super-villains become super-villains? Apparently, graduating from H.I.V.E. would be a good start. This fun romp starts with the arrival of a new class of students, kidnapped out of their daily lives and whisked away to an unknown hidden island. Whether sent by super-villain parents or snatched out of an orphanage because of a precocious prank on the Prime Minister of England, these teens must adapt to a new curriculum, consisting of Villainy Studies and Stealth & Evasion 101 in lieu of the traditional three Rs. Of course, some things never change-living up to a parent's reputation, dealing with the bullies from the Brute Squad and making new friends are part of every teen's life. And while some students are clearly happy to be where they are, there are those who are looking for a way out-any way out. This is a fun, intelligent and rapid read, an astringent breath of fresh air, in counterpoint to the sweetness of Hogwarts. Technology replaces magic, and brains are the key asset. This is Walden's first novel, but clearly not his last, as this is a six-year program. Let the adventure begin! (Fiction. YA)

"H.I.V.E.: The Higher Institute of Villainous Education"

"H.I.V.E.: The Higher Institute of Villainous Education", by Mark Walden, is one of my very favorite books! It's great, with all its suspense, twists, and turns. I love how the author is able to really show the thoughts and feelings of the villainous characters in this book, and give them a bit of a more endearing quality, rather than the dark and sinister personality usual expressed through "the bad guys". Walden does a great job of taking something that someone else may express as a dark topic, what with all the encouraging evil thoughts and containing lots of violence, and giving the wonderful story a comedic twist. I love H.I.V.E., and everyone in it. From the mysterious assassin Raven to the snarky former jewel thief Shelby Trinity, this book is one of the best (not to mention most begging to be turned into a major motion picture) books I have read yet.

    Fantastic!

H.I.V.E. is an extraordinary book where the main character isn't really a superhero. It's a mind-blowing story with suspense at the bottom of every page you won't be able to put this book down!

    I Also Recommend:

Great book by terrific author Mark Walden!

The story H.I.V.E. (Higher Institute for Villainous Education) takes place in a school in a volcano in the early 2000s. This story is by Mark Walden. In the beginning of the book a boy named Otto Malpense finds himself in a helicopter in the middle of an ocean. He has clearly been captured. There is a tall Asian boy named Wing Fanchu sitting next to him, and the two become fast friends. Wing and Otto are taken to a school for villains (H.I.V.E.) which is in the middle of a volcano. The school is run by a mysterious man named Dr. Nero, and his assistant is a deadly assassin called Raven. The boys meet other first-time students including Laura, Shelby, and Nigel. On their first day the students have unique lessons like Beginner's Evil, Tactical Education, Stealth and Evasion, and Practical Technology. After two months, they are still in the school, but Otto, Wing, Laura, and Shelby devise a clever plan to escape from the evil school. However, the four friends are caught at the last minute by Nero and Raven. Meanwhile that same night, Nigel, who is experimenting with plants, accidentally creates an enormous live monster flower. The evil creature rampages around the school. Otto finds a way to defeat this huge flower and crushes it under tons and tons of rock. Finally, Wing's mother is dead, but he has half of her amulet, and he notices that Dr. Nero has the other half! He decides to find out how Nero got it and stays at the school, and Otto stays with him.
The author's words in this book are very descriptive and paint pictures in the reader's mind. Also, the name H.I.V.E. is very foreshadowing, as the school is like a hive-or a prison. The book is very adventurous and the characters are creative. A negative fact of this book is that it was almost too mysterious-especially at the end. A few of the characters were unlikable, like the evil mind reading Contessa, and the obnoxious, whining, Franz Argentblum. There are also some difficult words in this book that I had to look up in the dictionary. Some of these words were monoliths and concentric.
The writing style of the author Mark Walden is very good. He used third person point of view in H.I.V.E. Walden also used a lot of figurative language in this book. The words were extremely descriptive. Some great words in this book were indicative, rebelliousness, monoliths, and concentric. Walden's writing style is also very easy to understand, save for a few words here and there.
I would recommend this book because it is descriptive, it is action-paced, and it is adventurous. It is also good because most of the characters are interesting and creative. A novel similar to this one is H.I.V.E. The Overlord Protocol (book two in the series). The London Eye Mystery is great too. Another good one is Scat. I have read a book by the same man who wrote Scat, Carl Hiaasen. This book by Hiaasen is Hoot. The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan is a very exciting book, the first in a series of five. I think many people would enjoy award winning The Mysterious Benedict Society by the terrific author Trenton Lee Stewart. These are all great books!

    H.I.V.E. is an awesome bok!

All Otto Malpense wanted to do was save the orphanage where he grew up. The next thing he knows he¿s heading to a place he never signed up for. A place called H.I.V.E which stands for Higher Institute for Villainous Education. It¿s a weird place on an island that nobody¿s ever heard about. They teach villains the art of things they thought should never be taught in school. What would you do? Otto knows what he would do, try to escape. The book starts with Otto in a helicopter where he awakens with no memory. He then becomes friends with Wing Fanchu, a martial arts expert. Next the helicopter descends into a volcano and they are amazed at the beauty that surrounds them. Then they find out that this is just the hangar. While they are given a tour of the facility Otto starts to think of a way to escape. They are shown a slideshow that shows that this place is more magnificent then they thought. They think it is a wonderful place to spend a couple of weeks until they are told that they have to stay for six years. When they are led to their rooms they meet the two other people that will help with their escape. Laura Brand is the electronics expert and Shelby Trinity is the diamond thief. Otto is determined to escape because he is not used to people being able to outsmart him. He has many questions like: why are they allowed to go to H.I.V.E. without their parents¿ permission and how does their food get there. Even though Otto doesn¿t realize it he is losing his desire to leave. Little by little you get to learn about Otto¿s time at H.I.V.E. along with his interesting path to being there. This book has a fluent mix of Otto¿s past and his interesting time at H.I.V.E. This book will show you that villains are more like us then you would think. If you like books that are action packed and that hold many surprises H.I.V.E. is the book for you.

"H.I.V.E.": The Higher Institute of Villainous Educati

"H.I.V.E.": The Higher Institute of Villainous Education", by Mark Walden, is one of the most creative books that I have read in a long time. It has a unique and entertaining storyline that keeps you interested in the book the entire way; although, it can be predictable at times. The characters are all different and fun. The story itself contains not only action, but humor too. It left me wanting more. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

    It was great :) -_-

I thought it had a great ending. I am also glad that the author siad they did not leave the island. If they did there would not have been a second book. This book is amazing and suprising. Read this book.

    Love It!!

I read this book out of boredom and since then i am hooked on the series. I love to read these, but i read them so fast(1 hour) but still love every word. Other spy like novels always gave the kids spy stuff that was too unreal, like teleporation paste and zero tragedy. I am nit saying that i like sad stories but it does weed out which are sensible and which are not. HIVE RULES!!!
