The story of men who rose to heroism, and then to something greater, "H.M.S. Ulysses" takes its place alongside "The Caine Mutiny" and "The Cruel Sea" as one of the classic novels of the navy, its men and its ships, at war. It is vintage MacLean — and unforgettable.

With a BA in English, I have read my share of the good, the bad, and the "why didn't someone take his pen away" books. This book will appeal to history buffs, people who like sea stories, and people who love stories with excellent characters -- characters who are flawed, fall short, but still keep trying to do the right thing. HMS Ulysses is one of the top 5 books I have ever read. The setting -- the convoys of materials into Archangel during WWII -- is described so vividly that you can feel the cold wind and the icy spray. The men of the ship, HMS Ulysses, have been pushed past their limit, and have quietly mutinied while in port -- not a "seize the ship" kind of thing, they simply couldn't face going out into the German wolfpacks again. As punishment, the ship is essential placed in a situation where the crew will work the convoys until they are killed. The story is about how men function when they are pushed to their limits and beyond. It is a story about the loyalty of the men to the Captain, and how he loves a crew he cannot save. It will be one of the books that stays with you after you read it for the rest of your life. I an thrilled I can have it on my NOOK!

Alistair MacLean's writing is timeless. If you've not read MacLean, start here and then keep going through his body of work. You will be intrigued, challenged and entertained. Enjoy.

I could not put this book down. Not to many novels kill off this many participants.

Mr. MacLean was a truly gifted writer. As you read this book, you feel as if you are trapped on this hellacious journey with the crew of HMS Ulysses. You experience their desperation, anger, fear, and sadness. At times, I had tears in my eyes. MacLean is a master at combining fact with fiction in order to create a compelling story!

I first read this twenty years ago and have recently read it again. It is one of the few books that truly has more impact and seems to get better with each reading. MacLean shows without embellishment that the bottom line of war remains that ordinary people are trapped in extraordinary circumstances and expected to perform. This should be a requirement for all of the service academies first classmen.

I've just finished reading this book for the 4th, maybe 5th, time since the early 60s... it's as exciting as the 1st time... more of a classic than you would think... MacLean's personal experiences as a young seaman on the North Atlantic Convoy runs in WW2 lends reality and credibility to this well-told tale.

Fanrastic! A gripping WWII book of men pushed beyond their limits and how they find the courage to keepgoing on. It kept me up reading long into the night. A book that will stay in your memory long after it's finished.

An outstanding, extremely well-written book that paints magnificent word pictures, is filled with wonderful characters and tells a story that is filled with courage, stamina, loyalty, friendship and unbelievable endurance. I read this many years ago and it was even better than I remembered. A "must-read"!
