Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Hockey is the official national winter sport of Canada and, it is appropriate therefore, that it is the central focus of a series of board books entitled "My First NHL Book." The NHL league is comprised of both Canadian and U.S. teams. For kids who are already fans, this book will add another dimension by highlighting some of their favorite players. For those new to the sport, they will see a variety of teams and players in different positions. Hockey Animals opens with an introduction to a team called the Anaheim Ducks. The text offers a squib of trivia about the team and the opposite page features a related animal that is the team logo (In this case a mallard duck) and a fact or two are associated with the full color picture. In additions to the Ducks, the Boston Bruins (bears), Buffalo Sabres (buffalo), Florida Panthers (panther), Minnesota Wild (black bear), Nashville Predators (saber-tooth tiger), Phoenix Coyotes (coyote), Pittsburgh Penguins (penguin), San Jose Sharks (Great White shark), and Vancouver Canucks (orca whale) are also highlighted. The facts presented vary from something as simple as "Coyotes are commonly born in a littler of six pups." to more complex information, such as that about the Emperor penguin, which describes its weight and habitat. The closing page recaps all of the logos chosen by the various teams. This type of board book would work in classes for older students where sturdy books with more adult content are useful.
