Part scientific history and part detective story, The Hockey Stick Illusion tells the extraordinary tale of the iconic global warming graph (created by the US climatologist Michael Mann), the global panic about climate change that it has helped to feed, and the tireless efforts of a lone amateur researcher, Steve McIntyre, that have comprehensively discredited it.

Overview

Part scientific history and part detective story, The Hockey Stick Illusion tells the extraordinary tale of the iconic global warming graph (created by the US climatologist Michael Mann), the global panic about climate change that it has helped to feed, and the tireless efforts of a lone amateur researcher, Steve McIntyre, that have comprehensively discredited it. From the earliest attempts to reproduce the Hockey Stick graph, to the explosive publication of McIntyre's work and the launch of a congressional inquiry, The Hockey Stick Illusion is a remarkable tale of scientific misconduct and amateur sleuthing. It explains the complex science of this most controversial of scientific findings in layperson's language and lays bare the remarkable extent to which climatologists have been willing to break their own rules in order to defend climate science's most famous finding. Already acclaimed by experts in the field, The Hockey Stick Illusion is an indispensable guide for anyone wanting to assess the credibility of global warming science.

Don't take this book at face value! A good book about how anti-climate change obfuscation is done.  That isn't the goal of this book, though. It is a perpetrator of obfuscation. I liked that the book delved a little into the technical side of the critique.  It did make some valid points that were actually confirmed by Michael Mann, the originator of the Hockey Stick chart. However, it also gave too much credit to such well-known (and documented) climate deniers and liars, James Inhofe and Joe Barton (of apology to BP fame). I recommend the book to anyone interested in Climate Change science and politics - and the obfuscation that is occurring just like that perpetrated by the tobacco industry.

To understand the "science" behind the "Hockey Stick", one needs a basic knowledge about statistics, which the author presents in a simple, easy to understand manner before tackling the details behind this important IPCC poster child. The chronological account details the efforts of Steve McIntyre and Ross McKitrick as they attempt to unravel the "scientific mysteries" surrounding the origin of the "Hockey Stick". Verbatim e-mails and pertinent excepts from scientific papers support a narrative that is written much in the manner of a scientific detective as he (they) attempts to solve data and statistical riddles posed by the deceptive Hockey Team Leader, Michael Mann. The account also delves into the dishonest tactics employed by IPCC Authors to shore up the faulty methodology used to construct the "Hockey Stick". The book was written before Climategate exploded on the Internet, so a final chapter was hastily assembled at the end of the book, since the details exposed by Climategate provided supporting evidence for the conclusions of McIntyre and McKitrick. I found the book riveting and read it in 4 days. I was so impressed with the details presented in the book that I purchased a second copy and sent it to my son, a meteorologist, for his birthday.

The world needs more courageous people armed with the scientific method debunking the tyranny and pseudoscience surrounding the global warming scare.
