This study undertakes a detailed examination of the role of chaplains in the Kingdom of Sicily. It analyzes sources and terminology, the chaplains’ life circumstances and areas of activity, and how they were seen by their contemporaries. The study shows that in southern Italy,chapels royaldid not functionas instruments of royal power. Instead, chaplains exerted influence at an informal level.
