Hoggin' All the Covers Unleashed!

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Jon O'Brien

Luckily, Band from TV, a supergroup made up of stars from some of U.S. TV's most high-profile shows including House (Hugh Laurie), Heroes (Greg Grunberg), and Desperate Housewives (James Denton), don't appear to be taking themselves too seriously, meaning that despite its amateurish pub rock quality, their debut album, Hoggin' All the Covers Unleashed!, is impossible to dislike. Like its title suggests, its 13 tracks are all pretty much straightforward renditions of classic rock & roll, soul, and ...

As the likes of Russell Crowe and Keanu Reeves can attest, making the transition from respectable actor to full-fledged rock star is usually a lot trickier than it seems. Like its title suggests, its 13 tracks are all pretty much straightforward renditions of classic rock & roll, soul, and country numbers, ranging from the '60s Brit-pop of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" to the blue-collar Americana of Bruce Springsteen's "Pink Cadillac" to the old-school blues of Wilson Pickett's "Mustang Sally." Recorded live at Los Angeles' Center Staging in a bid to raise money for various good causes, there are occasions when you have to be in a charitable mood to forgive some of the record's missteps, especially the over the top caterwaulings of Bonnie Somerville (The Ugly Truth), who misguidedly appears to fancy herself as a Janis Joplin impersonator on "Piece of My Heart." But some actors acquit themselves pretty well, particularly Denton, who provides a competent Elvis impression on "Viva Las Vegas," and, of course, Laurie, who hints at the jazz-blues direction his well-received Let Them Talk solo album pursued on a feel-good honky tonk rendition of the Leadbelly standard "Goodnight Irene." You get the feeling that Hoggin' All the Covers Unleashed! was perhaps much more fun for the people involved than for anyone listening to it, but it's certainly no disgrace, even if most of the stars on board shouldn't be advised to give up their day jobs just yet.
