Editorial Reviews

K-Gr 3-Amid advanced labor pains, an expectant mother goes for a walk while her family prepares for the arrival of a new baby. The bed is made up, plenty of firewood is brought in, and the youngest son, Juan, plays with a tiny sock and hopes for a brother. Every aspect of a home birth is realistically and explicitly described, including the details of the birth that takes place while mother stands, supported by her husband. The illustrations are extraordinarily poignant, reflecting a text both educational and inspirational. Soft pastels mirror the mood of joy created by the beautifully written story, which has been expertly translated. Some may argue that this picture book is unusually descriptive for the intended readership, showing the baby's head emerging from between his mother's legs and the family's examination of the placenta. Yet parents looking for articulate titles explaining the birth process will find this one reassuring and profound. Libraries and bookstores will want to have this book available. A true gem.DCheryl Scheer, Denver P.L., CO Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
