Though the book's amateurish layout doesn't do her any favors, cocktail expert Graham's love letter to tequila is a sound guide to a flavorful spirit often relegated to overly sweet drinks and shot contests. Graham does a terrific job of educating readers on the many facets of tequila, covering territory such as its primary types, the myth of the worm (found in mezcal, not tequila), bar-stocking and tasting tips, creating one's infusions, and how to recognize counterfeit tequilas. Though Graham's knowledge of and passion for the subject is endearing, readers will likely get the most out of her recipes, which range from classics like the Margarita and its many variations, the Tequila Sunrise, and the quick-and-easy Paloma (a mix of tequila, fresh lime juice, and grapefruit soda), to more inventive fare like the Verde Fizz (tequila, simple syrup, an egg white, limeade, club soda, and sliced kiwis) and the Mint Madre, a mix of torn mint, pineapple, orange bitters, agave nectar, and blanco tequila that's begging for a turn on the porch on a hot summer day. Thankfully, novelty recipes (like the Firecracker, a stomach-churning shot combining tequila, Goldschläger, and crème de menthe) are kept to a minimum; this is serious stuff for the most part. Though not an essential tome for the serious mixologist, this is a nice accompaniment to a gift of top-shelf tequila for agave initiates. Color photos. (Mar.)

There's more to it than just shots or margaritas, though, and interested imbibers might find this title an excellent way to expand their acquaintance with the blue-agave based liquor. Graham does provide a number of variations on the ever-popular margarita, as well as a round-up of possible origins for that drink. She also describes the various classes of tequila; what's necessary to keep a bar fully stocked for preparing tequila-based drinks; handy tips and techniques for making and mixing cocktails; and a nice variety of recipes from a tequini (a variation on a martini) to a cilantro-cucumber smash. The book concludes with a brief overview of the distillation process. VERDICT Informative and educational on the topic of tequila production, with notes on relevant cultural and historical information, this title will also be of great practical use to the person who'd really prefer to focus on sampling the spirit—it includes plenty of drink recipes, too. Colleen Graham has served as the cocktails, mixology, and bartending expert for the New York Times' Web site, About.com (Cocktails.About. com) since 2006. During her time as the Cocktail Guide she has developed a wealth of knowledge about finely crafted cocktails and mixed drinks. Graham is also a nationally certified bartender; she has studied with some of the best bartenders of the world, and has visited numerous distilleries to learn the process of producing alcohol. She has interviewed many of today's innovative master distillers, and develops original cocktails for companies such as Hiram Walker. Graham resides in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
