Hold Back Time sets up an intriguing mystery with a number of disparate elements that initially don't appear to tie together at all. But as Joy begins to dig deeper into the history of the lighthouse and the late movie star, pieces of the puzzle start to fall into place and in the end, the author ties up all the loose ends in a satisfying way.

Chapter 1

JOY'S MOUTH WENT dry and the fear on her tongue tasted like bits of metal left by the dentist. Sweat beaded her upper lip and a rivulet made its way between her breasts. She lay on her back, tangled in the sheet. A gull's faint cry filtered through the thick glass.

An inner alarm warned her of a presence... she was sure she heard soft breathing. Without stirring, she peered through slitted lids. A tall willowy figure stood in dim silhouette at the end of the sofa-bed just inches from her bare feet. Joy restrained an involuntary jerk of fear, and made herself lie perfectly still, trying to breathe normally. She hoped the person standing there couldn't hear her heart pounding in her chest.

The blonde woman wore a white sequined gown, cut low at the neck and split to the knee. Her backlit features were lost in shadow.

Joy struggled up, dragging the sheet under her chin in slow motion, feeling as though she moved through air as thick as molasses.

Don't be afraid, the woman rasped in a hollow babyish whisper. Terrible pain. Please help me. The woman's tone turned savage. They shouldn't be allowed to kill. To lie and kill.... That's wrong.

At last, with great effort, Joy managed to croak, "Who are you?"

The woman tossed her head. The light threw her white-blonde hair into a softly glowing halo. A soft chuckle rippled into the room. Ah, come on, Joy, she said in the same breathy voice. Or would you rather I call you Joyce? Or Ms. Mitchell? You know who I am. We've been together for months now. I'm Mona. Mona Sterling. Surely you recognize me?

With a jerk Joy's eyes flew open and she lookedabout wildly. Mona Sterling? The sheets were twisted around her body, the rest of the covers spilled onto the floor, but no slender figure stood outlined against a curved glass wall. She'd been dreaming again.

The throaty laugh still rang in her ears. She sank back onto the bed. Her own bed, not on a sofa-bed in a round room encircled by windows. In these dreams she always moved slowly, as though carrying weights on her arms and legs. Punching her pillow into a ball, Joy acknowledged -- this dream was different. Mona Sterling... the movie star? Why was she constantly dreaming of a dead movie star? Tomorrow... she told herself as she drifted back to sleep... she'd try and figure it out, tomorrow.

    A real page turner!

Hold Back Time was a real page turner, lots of mystery. Story line was quite intriguing, although I found the main character Joy to be somewhat of a mystery. One minute she's a strong, fierce, business woman, the next, a shrieking scardey-cat!
