Meet the Author

Kristen Ashley is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. She grew up in Indiana, but has lived in Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus she's been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least), but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multi-generational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland and existed amongst the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, living in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up. And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

400+ pages. Really great book. Great storyline and characters. The heat level scorches, in all the best ways. Really enthralling because of all the action and suspense. Why not 5 stars? Because a lot, and I do mean a lot of times, the story was hard to follow due to street slang and really awkward English use. Maybe it was written so to give an authentic feel. For me, it just made for a difficult read. That said, I read every word on every page ( a lot of them multiple times for understanding). The book is just that good. I loved the ending and the time spread. That was totally awesome. Final note, this is the final book in a series. However, it is the first book I have read in the series and by this author. Not quite sure how or why I pre-ordered it. I do not regret it, though. Not at all. I'm now off to buy the rest of the series. So, yes, you can read this without reading the prior books. I wish I hadn't, though. Just for the slight confusion of characters and a bit of backstory.

Sorry to see the series end but what an ending. Kristen never disappoints. I love the way the book brought everything full circle. Other books leaving you wondering what happened to the characters you've come to love.

theavidbooknerd.wordpress.com This book was the last one in the ‘Burg series and wrapped up the stories for two characters. Cher Rivers, who we met in “For You” when the villain used her as a sick placeholder for Feb. I came to admire Cher when she refused to let the latest horrible event in her life drag her down. Instead she builds a new and better life for herself and her son Ethan. In each following “The ‘Burg” installment her sassiness and straight forward approach to life was a welcome addition to the books. Garrett Merrick was introduced in “Golden Trail,” the brother of the heroine. The Merrick family had suffered a grave tragedy when they were children. Garret and Raquel’s mother was murdered and they both carry heavy emotional scars from it. Racquel (or Rocky) had her own adventure in dealing with the PTSD and found her happy ever after. But now it’s Garrett’s turn. Garrett’s ex-wife has gotten engaged and set up a for sale sign in her front yard. After waiting for Garrett to make a move to resolve their differences for five years, she’s finally moved on. And he has moved to the bar at J&J’s, throwing back whiskeys. Cher stays after closing, wanting to be a good friend for Garrett even though she would love to be more to him. When Garrett gets down on himself for pushing away the woman he loved, Cher stands up for him. Eyes opened, Garrett sees the truth behind Cher’s words and feels a weight fall from his shoulders. A couple more shots of whiskey and the next morning Cher wakes up to hear Garrett getting ready to leave the bedroom where they finally connected. Having dealt with disappointment her entire life she prepares herself for the rejection that is sure to come. Instead, Garrett treats her gently and ignites a fire of hope within her. Cher acts quickly on that hope but unfortunately overhears Garrett telling his partner nothing will change between them. Fire dashed, Cher heads homes. But nothing will defeat this girl and she determinedly adds another layer of ice to her defenses. Just in time because Trent, her son’s dead-beat dad, is waiting for her at her house. She and Ethan had been abandoned by Trent shortly after Cher found out she was pregnant. But now Ethan is almost eleven and his dad has been working to get back into his life. Cher loves her son and will do anything for him (including strip so he can eat) so she puts up with Trent. But when he claims that he wants shared custody, Cher is sucker-punched. She asks for time to consider it but the conversation dissolves into a blow up fight and Trent walks away threatening to sue for full custody. Reeling but not knocked down, Cher keeps moving on. She goes shopping with her son and does her best to prepare herself for the talk she knows is coming with Garrett. The very next day, while at work, Garrett comes in and offers to take Cher to lunch. She knows he’s doing it to be as nice about it as possible but it still hurts under the ice. What she wasn’t ready for was Peg, Trent’s new controlling wife, to come storming in demanding Cher take money from her so Peg can start the process of ripping Ethan away. Garrett, a smart detective and concerned for his friend, corners Cher and demands an explanation. Her response? He doesn’t want to be her man so he can’t have that from her. This time it’s Garrett who has a fire lit in him, one where he’s determined to take Cher’s back just like she had his.

I will premise this by saying I LOVE Kristen Ashleys books. But the last few (no matter the series) have been really lacking. I'm afraid she's going the way of many authors who, after a certain level of success, begin to pump out books for profit rather than entertainment. Atleast 100 of the pages in the book were wholly unneccessary. I found myself skipping through pages and pages of boring (yes) details upon details upon details. I liked the characters, ofcourse, but good lord half of the dialogue in this book is a repeat of a nearly identical conversation earlier. Just like in Ride Steady, the climax of the novel was incredibly lack luster. And to be honest I never even finished the Frankie/Benny novel....it got that boring. And the ending was soooooo drawn out. I love books that leave a bit of imagination left to the reader. She literally wrapped up every single character of every one of the Burg books with a nice big bow. No, imagination left for us readers at all! And to be frank, the big bows on every character was a bit corny. So I skipped most of that too, because those characters already had their ending! Please, please Kristen Ashley, take a break from writing and then come back and give us the stories you used to tell! I miss them!

Fabulous! Kristen Ashley's finale to "The'Burg" series was heart wrenching, heartfelt, and heartwarming. Her writing style was in fine form throughout the story, the dialogue realistic, and the banter witty and fun. I know I will be re- reading this series for years to come.
