Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
``Bear and Raggety, Little Doll and Donkey are going for a picnic,'' is the simple opening sentence of Maris's new picture book. When his three companions doze off, Bear wanders into the woods, with only a robin to caution him. But Bear, observed by small woodland creatures, seems headed for trouble; and when he falls down a deep hole, the robin speeds back through the woods to summon help. A rescue is effected with the aid of Little Doll's sash and Donkey's tail, and their efforts are successful. The rhythmic text is immediate and engaging, and Maris's pictures incorporate touches that will surprise and delight; wordless spreads give the book a quiet, assured pace throughout. Ages 3-6. PreS-K-- A book somewhat short on story but of possible use to those who incorporate crafts into story hours. The drawings are all based on ink finger and thumb prints, a favorite craft of many older children, although these are much more complex than the usual efforts seen in craft books. The action consists of Thumbkin, a little clown, who assists various circus acts with some minor problems. The Balancing Bears send Thumbkin to the Tightrope Walker (who is about to fall), who sends him to the Juggler (who is ``all butterfingers''), etc., etc. A single page is devoted to each act, and the drawings are all set in a gold ring devoid of any background setting. The ring and the act are set on a four-color pastel wash, and while the effect is pleasing, the drawings are too small and too detailed to share with a group. The story is too pedestrian to engage older children; toddlers may enjoy it on an individual basis, but they will be frustrated in their attempts to emulate the artwork beyond putting inky thumb-blots on a page. Collections with a heavy demand for circus books could possibly use this; those looking for books which encourage this art should stick with Ed Emberly's Great Thumbprint Drawing Book (Little, 1977). --Joanna G. Jones, formerly at Hunterdon County Library, Flemington, NJ
